Gave the young lad a 6" rule and asked him to measure the rust hole in his car and cut a plate to suit. Came back 30 seconds later and asked for a metric rule as he didn't understand Imperial so I gave the rule a rub between my fingers and handed it back metric side up. He was quite amazed at my magical powers.

I can't find it right now but somewhere I've got a steel rule with MM, normal (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) inches, decimal inches and inches divided into halves of thirds (1/3, 1/6, 1/12, 1/24, 1/48, 1/96). Has anyone seen this before?

We had one like that for doing miniature work for my wife's dollhouses as it measures the popular scales used. It's somewhere knocking about still but I haven't seen it lately. I think it was a multi scale ruler.

Many years ago I was at local tip when a chap came in with boxes of drill bits. Some were brand new and others resharpened. I asked why he was binning them and answer he now only worked in metric but these were Imperial so came home with me. Must have cost a fortune as M2 & M3 with largest being over 1"
