Welding chrome

I have a bathroom towel holder that has a sloppy interference fit and was wondering if i can add a spot weld to hold it instead of the current grub screw? Would only be size of a match head.
1 Can i weld chrome plating with steel wire MIG
2 Aware of fumes etc but if done outside and as above very small spot would any fumes cause an issue?

Never heard of such a thing as a sloppy interference fit, but know what you mean, you may be better off using epoxy adhesive for an invisible repair,

I had thought of that Gordon but not sure epoxy will be long lasting....?

rough it up a bit in the joint and loctite. it will never come out unless u heat it up

What about lightly peening the tube over a steel mandrel to expand the diameter until it's a tighter fit?

some of the brackets that hold the steel tube are made from alloy so might not be able to weld it

I think the answer is that you'll be able to put a dab of weld on with no issues, provided it's steel underneath.

I've welded a number of sockets which were all chrome plated, and I don't recall any of them presenting any problems nor have I noticed any fumes, and last time I checked I've not died of any...

Welding chrome will give off hexavalent chromium which is really bad for you but it's probably only anything to worry about if you're doing it a lot with really poor ventilation.
