Universal spool gun?

It says it fits any mig, I assume it automatically stops the welders wire feed when in use? Is the wire feed control on the gun or does it use the welders wire feed control?

It looks similar to the eBay one for £60 but I have yet to find anyone who's bought one and tried it in anger.
I toyed with the idea of getting one to fit to my old SIP mig and leaving it permanently set up for aluminium.

I'd like to know how it could automatically stop the machine's own wire feeder when there's no interface...

I've seen the mma/mig converters before as well, by all accounts they 'sort of' work, but not well.

I would imagine that you flip the machines wire feed roller OFF and it then takes some of the welding voltage to power it's feed motor, so working like a SIP or similar that use the welding voltage to power the feed motor and we know how well that works
I could be wrong though.

Yea I saw that which is why I posted the cheaper eBay version!

Looks similar to one I have used. You remove original whip for euro socket then plug in S&G system, one I use has a small box with I guess contain electronic components. There is also another cable to add, small dia, one end pushed into gizmo box, other end is basic crocodile clip, which you attach work, kinda like another earth return. I used it in anger on an old Allander Car, torch worked a treat.

The seller is in Poland, but has reliable feedback. Feedback from buyers of the torch seem positive too, so fingers crossed. probably be about 2 weeks for delivery at most. Its not a lot of money to lose if its a failure imo.

Has anyone seen Svseeker on youtube using one of these to good effect with aluminium? He is an amateur boat builder and professional IT guy more than a welder but he makes a good account of himself with the kit.

He is a really nice guy and along with Doubleboost he is the fella I follow most avidly on Youtube.

I viewed most of video, cant say I was impressed with weld quality, even less impressed with the guys use of power tools and, scant lack of interest of PPE. Al/al mig welding wearing a T-shirt, if gent carries on his diy exploits with no regard to proper ppe, he is a sure candidate for skin cancer. He should stick to IT, safer, less hazards, mind you, so is welding, if safety is applied properly!

I've sometimes looked at the welding he produces and had the odd concern but he is halfway through building a boat and I'm not so I say fair play to him and good luck. He seems to be a do-er and not a typer on internet forums like myself.

The welding in bare sleeves seems to be a common behaviour affliction in America and not just restricted to him, I blame American Chopper. I still think he is doing a good/effective job and the video documentation is great.

It appears Tec Arc are the importer / manufacture of this spool gun

It states "Unique design means no separate control box or mains supply is needed, just plug in & weld." so does appear to be different from cheapo ebay ones.

I think I will phone them tomorrow to get the details, as mike109444 says it might take some of the welding voltage to power it's feed motor, in which case I suspect it will be crap, hopefully not for the price!!
