for some reason the taps and dies i just bought do not match normal threads, eg i got some m12 threaded rod and i tried to turn the m12 die on but it just wouldent budge so i put the rod in the vice and tried again, i had to put some amount of force on the die to get it to go on and once i took it off it seemed to crush the thread on the bar!, its like the die is meant for an 11mm thread, or am i doing something wrong? it was a cheap set made by "valley" and is similar to the ones in here http://www.honest-johns.co.uk/index.php?product_id=105134&option=Prod_detail

I have learnt never to buy cheap taps and dies, been there done that.
I just spent £40 on a set of dies M3 to M10, coarse thread, no die-stock, no gimmics.
They are HSS, not carbon steel and make cutting threads a pleasure, also the quality of the thread is stunning.
Earlier i got a set of HSS taps in H6 grade, three taps per size, and you really need to use all three, not cheat and skip the second cut etc. The result is a great thread again and being HSS, less chance of breakage.

A reasonable carbon steel set will set you back £80+, a low quality hi-speed steel (HSS) £130+, top quality HSS £250+. (M3 - M12, die stock incl)
Screwing is expensive!! Most cost-effective way is to use low price HSS set, and then replace the most commonly used taps and dies with higher grade, as and when required.
Remember as nanny used to say:- "if you screw the wrong thing you could damage your nuts "!!

Yep J&L are good, just avoid some of the cheapest lines, I had a set of cheep center drills that were just well err crap, but excellent delivery, and I like the save order function so you can add things to the list on the day you thing of it then order the whole lot at say the end of the month....American company BTW...

Still messing about at the hydraulics co. Day off tomorrow as they're having an open day, showing off the Beemer etc. Government ministers coming and allsorts.
BTW Snowy, the big difference between their hydraulic drive and yer typical fancy tractor drive is their valve technology - very, very spesh computerised valves which allow everything to operate at maximum efficiency. No (minimal) heat generated, no cooling systems/tanks required. The valves operate at 97% eff !!!
It's an interesting place to work, and incredibly relaxed. "Graft" is not a word ever heard within their walls. Essentially it is a privately owned extension of Edinburgh University Engineering Department. Only the lads in the machine shop, and the works foreman have industrial experience, everyone else is a graduate, some have never worked anywhere else. No clocking in or out, turn up when you like, leave when you like, don't take the pi55 (it will be noticed). Fantastic.
I shall be going along tomorrow afternoon for the guided tour, free canapes and glass of white!
Also, anyone else in the area is welcome to go along after 3.00 pm. Runnach, if you're free, you might like to go up. Big Joe too!

It's development. At the mo the boot is full of computer...... Bosch have bought the rights to the system, which gives you an indication of where it's going.
The clean room is in the process of putting together a load of valve units in big 12" dia x 16" blocks for truck drives, going off to Bosch USA sometime soon (3 months late, as we speak).
Yes, i'm working for the engineering equivalent of google, but i'm the equivalent of the man who changes the lightbulbs in the office (funnily enough...)
