Although supplies seem to vary, I think it's accurate to say you can't expect them to run off a 13a fuse.

I use a 180a oil cooled at work and melted the power switch that's part of the 32a socket box!

Yes I think that's an accurate way of describing it, because there is as we know always the exception to the rule, even if it's a rare exception.

That's suspiciously similar to mine before I got the 3ph hooked up, I only used it in the cooker socket, I didn't fancy it on the ring main

Yes but I only used the welder when the cooker wasn't in use, in my house the ring main usually has washing machine + tumble dryer + dishwasher + TV ++++++ running about 26hrs a day!

get a grip and educate the wife to cut it out when your welding

Hire it, I can hire an ESAB c271 MIG for £60 PW that runs on single phase (will need at least 20 amp plus supply though). Add the wire and gas you will need to pay for and get it all welded in a week.
Its not the type of project you want welding badly in any way as having it come apart miles from anyplace is going to put an end to your expedition real quick.
