Myford Tuffnel Gears - Which gear cutter?

I want to cut some new tuffnel gears for my lathe and need to know which gear cutter I would need to cut them. Its the 28 & 30T gears on the direction lever that drives the change gear set.

Can you not get them from Myford. I know they cost approx £20 each but by the time you've sourced the correct profile cutter & taken the time to make them into account is it worth the effort. If the parts were unobtainable I could understand why you would want to make them yourself.

I can get them from myford at nearly £40 a pair. Managed to trash 2 sets in a week due to school boy error of not setting up correctly!! I would like to make my own for the experience.

Thanks CRB. They are a No 4, 20DP and 14.5PA which by sheer luck I have one that I got with a batch of 'engineering tools' I won on a random eBay bid!! I am going to make some new gears from Delrin.

The reason they are Tufnol is so they DO break when a set up error is proven. Making them from something less forgiving MAY result in damage to something else, which may not be as easily, read cheaply, repaired.

just be more carefull. ive had my myford for 40 years and never knacked anything and all the gears are iron

The main reason they fitted them is not as a sacrificial safety device, it's for quiet running, even more important on the super seven because of the higher spindle speeds, like B S I've had my myford over 50 yrs with no trouble & they're tufnol.

If you do make your own I think you have to make them out of sheet and not rod..

No you can make them from rod just fine. I have two gears in my lathe made from Delrin rod.

I think he was referring to the use of Tufnol, due to the way the laminations are done on sheet versus rod.

Oh I see. I saw the quoted post and thought he was referring to making them from Delrin.

I am going to make them from delrin. I have two on now made from delrin and they work just fine and are quiet. My old Chinese lathe all the gears were plastic.

I thought the tunnel ones were made from rod though?

I did find iron gears in the box of stuff I got with the lathe a couple of years ago but they are very noisy. Making a batch of delrin ones will give me emergency spares and practice cutting gears that have a practical use.

Slight hiccup in the plan.... The gear cutter I need to fit my mandrel is 1" bore, the one I have is the wrong size.... Anyone have a source of a 1" bore No4 20DP 14PA involute gear cutter....

I think it's a case of 'have lathe, make mandrel'

There's a bloke on eBay selling these for about 20 quid the pair brand new. As per my other thread I had nought but issues with the ones from Myford culminating in them admitting there was an issue with the batch and refunding me with no idea when it would be sorted.ill see if I can find the eBay linky

Yep I bought some from him and they are great. The myford ones were ****e, ten tooth broke off one still sealed in the bag!!

That's why I want to be able to cut my own. What's the point of having the toys and buying from someone else!!

Myford argued with me that I was setting them wrong, until I made them go and get a tumbler arm out of stores and tell me exactly what adjustments they reckoned I could make

I wonder if they were cut from rod not sheet?

They just weren't cut correctly full stop, they meshed too tightly which in turn ripped the teeth off
