hope to get some quick help on welding a gate

if you can look athe attached pics and give me any help on welding it

i quick taged the plate on with my mig but i am sure it is not man enught to do it as the plate will fall off if pulled

i have got a weld mate stick welder from memory it goes to 100 poss 120 amp am i fooling my self if i think i can do this

the weld would have to be good as the cement has failed and it needs this so i can screw it back to the wall to share the weight and to stop the lean over

ps this has got to last for only few years as once i get round to it will replace the gates complete but having to spend money on the house first

i have cleaned it all back to bear metal i was trying to tag the metal plate so i can use the stick welder to secure it strongly

i estmate the tag of metal to be 7or 8mm if that helps i do have a good amount of welding rods what size should i be using for this

It will stick on there one way or another I'm sure. Probably with that machine a 2.5 rod will work best (try a 3.2 aswell, just in case). On the vertical runs try to angle the rod pointing upwards at 45 degrees or so and weld up with a slight weave, this will give good penetration into the thick material. Keep chipping and brushing you welds and lay on more beads, grinding away any bad blobs as you go. Weld all the bits you can get to and then a wee hammer test to see how well its stuck on. If it takes a hammering without falling off you've got it! Good luck!

Maybe if you can use a short rod and bend it in the holder it might help get a bit of weld around the back-it all helps.

epic fail what I think my main problem is I rubbish at welding but after an hour I grinded it and the lug fell off

Some of the problem is the angle I think as when the stick is welding is not really in the crack if I push it in to the crack to weldboth sides it sticks wave side to side ?

That's a fair angle for v up, but if it works for you. I run pretty near square with only a minor push personally. Are you running up so steep for any reason?
2.5 most likely for that plant, I should use a good rod though no rubbish

It doesn't look as if you've got much juice into that weld, and it's hard to get at, and that back plate doesn't look very clean.

Maybe time for some lateral thinking.

Have you got to do this awkward weld? How about putting a steel band round the post and welding the band to a plate which can be bolted to the wall?

That is a very narrow angle to get into. Sounds like you're having issues with this already. They're really tricky to get the arc to melt both sides before the V fills with weld and slag and obscures the lot. I don't like doing them.

Instead of trying to weld it in one go, whack the machine up on max and try to get a tack to stick to the bottom of the join and both bits. Chip off the slag and if it has caught well and is not too hollow underneath, add another weld on top, try to fuse both bits of metal and the original weld. Again, try to keep the weld deep in the V and not too hollow. Repeat until you're at the top.

Or just use a bit of angle as above

Better still, you could weld the angle to the plate at a bench so that you were welding down into a V, so no vertical welds. Then slip the bracket down the back between the post and the wall. Make sure you've got the holes in the wall drilled right, then tack the angle to the post and bolt it in place.

It's very narrow to get a rod in which is ultimately the problem. I'd definitely be taking the advice above and make a new bracket. I'd do it in the form of a T so like you have it at the moment but longer giving you acess to get a run on the back then a small plate on the pipe to the bracket at the front so there is a few places to get a run in If it's possible to get in there if not extend it round the pipe. Either way a redesign is the way to go if your welding isn't strong enough as it is.

thanks for all your replys and thanks for the help i did think it was deep to weld i have got a piece of angle and thinking that might be the way to got and thanks all and richard for the drawing that is what i needed i think that will be the way to go but will have one more stab at just welding it on have got the day off so will play with it all day if needed but i do think i have a problem with the weldmate as seams to weld good for the first half hour but then does not weld right after that just keeps getting stuck to the work i put in more amps but seamed to do nothing it has done well for me as i only bought it for £10 and it has done a fair few jobs around the house fixing beds basic bits but will be looking again for a arc as well as a mig ithink

You could put a peice of electrode wire into the bottom of the vee, and weld over it, stick welds hate narrow vee's like that, the arc and the flux go out of control.

That's because its done its bit and needs to rest, basically power fade at the hot end. Not enough amps is sure to give you bad starts, too many amps gives mad flarey ones, its a point many miss duty isn't all about thermal cut out . You will sometimes see the rods start struggling to melt and lacking the deep penetration it might have started with before the light ever comes on and the set stops or a fuse trips.

Weld the bracket onto the side of the tube further out, and use a standoff with the bolt.

Well here's an update the tab is welded and fairly well as long as you don't look at the weld to close I hammarded it and still stuck on put a fixing in the wall and works well as said not that much weight so works well and its a fix for a while

Now for the bad news the rest of the jobs did not get done as on cutting a tube to finish fixing the blade broke on and angle grinder and flipped and cut across my leg

See pics of finished job and if you don't like the site of blood and bone don't look at the 3rd PIC and it was worse than this PIC as it does not show it that well

yes 1/2 inch forward would cut bone 1/2 inch back would have sliced the mussel most of the way through i did have to have 5/7 stiches to mussel to connect it back up and 18 stiches to close up the skin but was told should be up and about in 5 days ?????????????

and the cause the blade broke and it was not a cheap disk ether about £9 for 5 disks not the c**p from unknown well used internet sites saying no names
