MAG welding settings chart

[Mid Wales welder]

Hi all, does anyone know where I can find a MAG welding settings chart witch shows amps, volts, travel speed and maybe even heat input for given thicknesses of steel, and for each joint type. I need it for working out WPS's so needs to be accurate, although I will test them in the workshop just to check its all right. The Miller calculator only goes up to 12mm thick. Thanks in advance.

Linde and Lincoln both used to do books that had a good selection of procedures in them, don't know if they are still available though

Google search for the arc welding procedure handbook by the james f lincoln foundation, it contains lots of example wps'ses. Will try to scan some pages monday.

I rang Lincoln in Sheffield and ordered some welding books including the one mentioned above, Price was actually pretty good, and the books have EVERTHING in them, Well worth spending a few bob,

Can I ask which books you got in total? I have a couple of welding and fabrication books but they are a bit basic. I have the 'metals and how to weld them' by J F Lincoln which has a lot of metalerical info.

I have the one that you have too, Also have the " the welding bible" (The procedure handbook) fourteenth edition. Its about A4 size and over two inches thick. I have another somewhere but can't find it at the moment,

Think I may have to get that, can only find it shipped from USA though so all together it's about £50, should be worth it though.

Have you heard of a program called 'WPS maker 2.0'? It looks quite handy, but wondered what you thought of it.

Yes I have the Miller app but it only goes up to half inch.

Sorry mate yeah I see your first post explained that. I didn't read it properly. I'll have a look on my pc when I'm at work and see what I have. I have loads of stuff like that so I'm sure I can help. Bear in mind that when you start going up and above 12mm the settings don't change much at all because at that thickness your going to start multi passing. I'll dig out some stuff tomorrow for you.

That would be a massive help thanks, yes I know what u mean about going into multi runs. For the PQR test I did we ran 29v 250amps for single run fillet on 6mm and the same settings but triple run for 30mm fillet.
It's more travel speeds I'm after really. I've ordered the procedure handbook as mentioned above today so should have that soon.
It's all a bit new to me with this CE marking, I did a two day RWC course last year and haven't really touched it since as we are so busy with other work and it's taken ages to do the PQR's and welder quals. So now I need to write the WPS's and having never done them before its a bit of a headache lol. Thanks again!

Can you not use the actual travel speeds you use to produce the test pieces rather than pre specify them, how will the welder producing the samples ensure he is using the same travel speed you have written on the procedure sheets?

Exactly the best thing you could do is specify weld sizes rather than travel speeds. The wps can have bead width, hight tolerances which will ensure there within correct speed lines.

I think the travel speed is more about your heat input calculations, the welder is going to be more concerned about ensuring he is producing a weld of the right size than hitting the right travel speed and if he is producing a correct size weld the chances are he is going the right speed anyway

I've put together an excel SS based on the info from weld procedures I have on file. No travel speeds though for the manual welding wps's only for automation ones. Again my SS only goes to 10mm thickness because those conditions are suitable for multi passing so I'm not sure it will give you any more info than you already have but your welcome to have it. I'll see if I can up load it.
