Been playing on an industrial auction site

Just "won" this (Nederman extraction hose [not the actual extraction system!]) for £40 and will attach to my home made extractor;

And this Amcor de-humidifier for £15, which I will install in an attempt to fight the rust;

Yeah - it came up when there was around 15 minutes left - must have missed it first time round.
So I did a quick google and they cost £200-£300 new.

Pretty chuffed.

I missed out on a self-propelled petrol mower where I was the highest bidder at £10 but "Reserve not met" so you don't win 'em all...

More like £800.

I bought a brand new 10m length of pvc hose from arco to replace the tatty lengths I had, and that was over £140 for just the hose. The nederman hose is in a different league. Its more flexible than the pvc stuff of mine, but nobody seems to sell an equivalent.

You're kidding? F*** me! Awesome, if that's the case - I'm certainly hoping it's better than the £8 washing machine hose I'm using right now

It'll still burn, only metal can withstand spatter and grinding sparks. But stays together well even when peppered with holes. Could you roll a piece of sheet metal into a pipe for the very end?

A tall style pub co2 bottle makes a good form for a 150mm tube.

It's the need to collect, usually in a narrow time span, that puts me off industrial auction sites. Often there's good stuff on offer, but if it's miles away and you win only one of your ten bids it takes the shine off the bargain

Yep - that's a good point. This is my second auction and I got stung on the first one, not realising that I needed to be onsite (30 miles away) before 12 the next day.
And all for one router.

This one worked out well as it's the bank holiday weekend and we're heading North tomorrow, so I took the day off.
If I'd only one a single item (apart from the Nederman) I'd have been a bit miffed, but this one worked out OK.

But, as you say, typically you have to pay same day and collect next day.

But, as you say, typically you have to pay same day and collect next day.

One other point is that I make my own hours - I don't work for myself, but I typically put in a 60 hour week so taking a couple of hours out to go pick some stuff up isn't really a problem for me.
The auctions probably wouldn't suit anyone who has a 9-5 job, not least cos the pickup times are often something like 10:00 to 13:00 on a weekday.

If you're self-employed, though, it may be a way to get some decent tools or stock (often sold sight-unseen, of course)

Great question.

The way this company (Sweeney Kincaid) works is that you need to front a deposit before you can bid.
The minimum deposit is £100 and you can withdraw that money at any time (apologies if this sounds like an advert for the auction company - I'm just trying to recite the facts).

Once you deposit your, I guess, "seed fund" you can bid up to ten times that amount. So I had £100 hard cash in there (as in they had £100 of my money) and I could place bids up to £1,000 in total across any number of auctions.

I blew £30 on the waste-of-money router in my virginal auction so that left £70 of hard cash in the kitty, aka £700 of bids. On this auction I had around £300 of bids at one point but eventually "won" (still not sure that's the right word) £110* worth of kit. They then allocate your balance (~£70 in my case) to the bill and I had 24 hours to make up the £40 balance. So I paid that, this afternoon, via Paypal.
Unsurprisingly, I needed to pay that this afternoon before I can turn up tomorrow to pick up the kit.

And we start again - my account is now at £0 so I can bid up to ten x £0 (=£0 for the mathematically challenged ) on future auctions.

I still need to pick up my spoils tomorrow (there's a mitre saw in the collection, too, which I didn't mention) and we'll see how good the return was.

But the short version is that, for this auction company anyway, you'll get the money back as credits on future purchases anyway, or you can retrieve the funds at any time.

One important caveat, which doesn't apply to ebay or gumtree is that most auctions attract 20% VAT and 15% auction fees. So the prices should be assumed to be +35%, unless you're VAT registered, in which case they are still +15%


But, hey - it's harder than ebay and gumtree. Which means there are fewer buyers competing with you...
