"Hard-wearing" paint for metal?

Howdo chaps.

Can you buy small-ish tins of hard-wearing paint? Reason for asking is that as of next week, I'm changing back to driving an artic, and quite often we swap loaded trailers mid-journey. When this happens, all the load restraint chains and ratchets generally stay on the load, and despite best assurances, they end up staying on someone else's lorry.

A lot the gear I use is my own personal kit that I've acquired over the years, and I want to keep with my wagon. My intention is to paint my own stuff, just the hooks will do, with pink paint, which sounds odd, but everyone else uses red or yellow. Only an odd-bod like me would use (or be seen with, ) pink, so there's no chance of anyone claiming my gear for their own.

Is such a paint available, or would I need to add a hardener to "normal" gloss paint?

Thanks for all the replies, chaps, should easily be able to sort the job out. The colour choice is simply because none of my work chums would be seen dead with pink tackle. (That sounds wrong on every level ). And as I'm thought of as being a bit, err, strange , it will only enhance my reputation .

How about getting them powder coated? Available in practically any colour your heart desires and shouldn't cost too much.

Just clean them and give them a blast or brush over with hammerite or another std metal paint not requiring a primer now and again. An hour every few months or so?

A coat of POR-15 followed by a spray of fluorescent pink paint before it finishes curing.

Simplest way is to get a load of coloured cable ties and wrap them onto many different parts of your kit. They are cheap, easy to apply and most of all will not annoy the inspectors when they come to inspect your lifting gear as they do not like paint on any lifting kit.

Cable ties are very widely used in factories to show indate lifting kit. Evertime a new inspection has been carried out they change the cable ties to the current colour to show they have been tested.

I gather your not a trucker? It is not lifting gear, it is ratchets and hooks. They don't get tested so not sure where you get that idea from. Nothing wrong word coating the hoods and ratchet.

Yes your right im not a trucker and clearly didnt understand the post, If paint is allowed and not an issue then its the way forward, Just ignore the tosh i just posted

That's what I'd go with. Tractor enamel/paint is theoretically tougher, but judging from a little bit of poly enamel I've recently tried, I honestly can't say as I've personally noted any difference bar the fact it uses a different solvent, and possibly slightly quicker tack/curing times.

A lot of 'hard wearing' enamels & paints also tend to be brittle and will chip off easily and given the hard life your chains lead the paint would be gone in no time. I would suggest powder coating as it is very tough but also flexible.
