Double gates

I want to make a pair of double gates 6ft high x 4ft wide each as an entrance to a pergola...kinda on the lines of these. Am i better making 1 complete gate with identical sides and after its made then cutting it right down the middle or trying to replocate 2 of the same.i have my home made ring roller so doing an arch top will work also.cheers

Build one then use it as a jig and build the second one on top of it, the arched top could be made as one to get a nice even curve then split, but that's as much as you need to do,

If you need gate finials bits etc Henry at spencer steel has all the weld on bits in stock.

Myself, I prefer to make double gates side by side because its an idiot proof way to marry up the latch, latch holder, drop bars and any other attachments you require.

A few things to remember

1. make sure everythings perfectly level when setting up- sounds obvious but its especially important on a double gate.

2. When welding the frame up, clamp the two gates together tightly in the centre where the two gates meet, if you don't they will bow slightly and wont run true with each other when the gate is in the closed position.

3. On a curved gate, make sure the peak of the curve hits the upright at 90 degrees, so when the gate is closed, the curve is nice and continuous- theres nothing worse than an arch gate with a pointy peak in the middle

Funny enough they had their christmas do on the same night at the same venue!!!!

Gates back from the galvo crew and hung today...ime a big fan of Art deco and wanted a little bit of that to show through in my design but still have them kinda open as not to give that locked in feeling.Anyway very happy with the result and there heavy too being made from 8mm bar..Oh btw its a walkway to my workshop which is the solid brown steel door in the background.
