Thread identification

I'm needing to change the oil warning light switch on the Nissan FD35 lump in my 109. It's currently got some sort of mechanical job on it with a crimped off pipe on it.

To start with I just want to fit an electrical type low pressure switch, then at a later date double up and fit an oil pressure gauge too.

The thing is, I don't know what thread the current switch is - so, how does a complete numpty like me go about identifying the thread on it?

Please use words of one syllable and any diagrams in yellow crayon for preference...

So easiest thing for me to do is take it to my local engineering fella and say 'scuse me mate, what thread is this?'

Have you not got a collection of old nuts in a tin you can use to try and be lucky to find one to fit? you might be lucky. I suppose one could say being Japanese it could be metric but try it and see.

I have my tin of random stuff, generally know as my 'dirty box'. It's got me out of many a pickle in the past. I have tried an assortment of both metric and imperial but none seem to fit.

1/8 NPT

Thanks for the offer. Parts are a little hard to track down and identify. The FD35 engine was fitted to Cabstars/Atlas trucks but were generally not available in the UK market.

That's a good point. Now all I need to find is something that has a 1/8 npt hole to test it...

Its a very common size for oil pressure ect on cars and trucks...try these

That's a good point. Now all I need to find is something that has a 1/8 npt hole to test it...

The database covers the world, so may not be such a problem, I just highlighted Europe, not knowing.

The oil pressure switch in the LT is M10x1, but I am sure that adaptors were used for gauge fitting by some owners.

I just checked it out. Definitely some Engrish translation going on as it's listed as an Atras. Got the 4.2 litre engine listed but not my puny 3.5. I've had a quick browse but cant seem to find the oil pressure switch listed but a few beers may be clouding my judgement.

The oil pressure switch in the LT is M10x1

I should be able to test this theory as I know I have some M10x1 manifold nuts in the back of a drawer somewhere.

I could not find the correct switch either, so thought it was just me, but then again I did not see Atras either, just CabStar.

Good luck then, when clearer in the head.

More than likely a metric thread, so measure the outside and the pitch. Easy, and a tape measure is good enough, unless it is not metric of course.

There's no point in trying to guess what it is, you're going to have to bite the bullet and take it out and measure it or take it somewhere to get it measured.

Well, just as an update/thank you for everyone's input.

The thread is M10x1, discovered by the method of removing it and spinning a manifold nut on to it. New oil pressure switch is on order.

Many a brake pipe nut is M10 x 1.0mm.
