If you use a scribe or even a Stanley knife to mark the steel, then rub chalk across it the line is very fine (good for accuracy) and it stands out clearly.

Another tip for marking lines parallel to an edge is to set a pair of vernier calipers to the required distance, lock them then run one jaw along the edge and mark with the other jaw. Can be used on a lathe as well to mark lengths.

Picked a couple more digital Verviers at Aldi's last week.. Agree with Wedg1e keep the good gear for special jobs, the 2Aldi ones seem to be excellent quality for the money, on special offer £4-99 each. Large display and auto on and off.
oh, and pretty accurate to boot.
