what and wheres the best place to buy a repair manual for a vauxhall combo van .are haynes stiil the best ??

I honestly don't think you can go far wrong with a Haynes though if you can find a copy of the genuine tech one that would also be good to have.

Haynes are generally rubbish, refer to main dealer/ seek professional advice.

They've gone all PC "n" H&S conscious, just in case some muppet hurts them-self and sues them.

OEM manuals are the best, imho.

I have just bought a Haynes for the 99Octavia.

It is rubbish beyond belief. I do not understand why there is not an online/pdf version yet either.

The photographs are still black and white and abominable.

I bought them for the MZs, Guzzi and LT, all pre90, things seemed better then.

you used to get a Haynes for just about anything locally now they don't even have the common ones on the shelves. Cant be bothered anymore though I just drive them down to the local garage with a list of what I want doing An hour for them with all the experience a cool gear at hand is four for me out on my yard

Was just complaining about Haynes manuals yesterday! nearly every sentence starts with Apply the brake,chock the wheels disconnect the battery, then it's all rubbish pictures that you can barely see and can't recognise. When you do find the bit you want it's refer to section 10.1 then see pic 9.3 ,go to etc etc. and don't even mention the wiring diagrams .

Yes there are problems with Haynes but in the absence of the manufacturers workshop manual there is often little alternative other than google and youtube.

To be fair though for torque settings alone it is worth having one handy.

What do you need a book for??? Surely if you're at a level of mechanical competence where you can fix stuff on a modern vehicle, you've got enough competence to know how to do the job just by looking and figuring out?

Even if you are competent you still need torque settings and other adjustment settings.

Pah torque settings, just tighten it till you start to strip threads then back it off quarter of a turn When I changed the clutch on my bmw bike it seemed scary to me just how little torque was needed for some fasteners I had to buy a small torque wrench because my normal one didn't go down low enough.

The torque settings sometimes are incorrect though, a friend of mine was rebuilding his 1.3 Marina years ago, torqued up the big ends & stripped the thread or broke the bolt, can't remember which, he thought at the time the manual figure was b tight, then bang. He checked the given torque with a BL manual & the Haynes was way higher. He wrote to Haynes & complained, but got nowhere, they said that was the figure given by BL. My mate argued that in the front of the book they said we strip & rebuild every car, if they had they would have realised there was a discrepancy.

I remember looking in some Haynes manual's and they tell you to remove parts you don't need to remove in order to do certain jobs, anyone following them to the letter must spend way more time on jobs then needed
