New Workshop, getting there

I have been working on turning my garage into a half decent workshop, mainly to focus on powder coating and do a bit of porting work as required. I started of by insulating the outside facing walls with 50 mm celotex insulation boards, i then boarded out with knauf acoustic board to try reduce the noise outside - man they're heavy, 28kg per board!

I then built a partition so I can have a clean area for coating and curing and a dirty area for blasting and the like.

Need to paint now and fit some batons to secure air lines to, then i am installing 2 sets of copper piping air lines with condensers. One from the oil less compressor for running the powder gun and the other off my main compressor for blasting and running air tools. Also building a acoustic box to house the compressors which will double as another work bench.

Should be ready to get back coating then

Oh, and need to give the booth a lick of paint after a sanded it back to fresh, cut the hole for the extractor in the ceiling. Insulate the attic roof and what ever else i have overlooked!

Thanks, well bright after I painted the ceiling, floor and internal facing walls. It's going to be well organised, makes working much easier.

Also got to fit the door seals and insulation from weatherstop.co.uk to seal up the garage door, should make a nice difference

Back of the garage door.... Bond some 25mm celotex boards to it, all help keep some heat in.
Maybe some draught excluder brush around the perimeter.

25mm would fit with a bit of persuasion but interfere with the mechanism even tho I could cut around it.. Getting the insulation kit, and the seals for the floor, ceiling and sides. Looks like good stuff - not cheap but not that bad. Saying that the floor seal costs the same as a brush type seal. I'll report back if it's good tackle.

That's going to be warmer than my house! My workshop doesn't even have walls yet, lots of ventilation! What are you using to heat it?

No plans on adding heating, got 2 ovens in the clean area so should provide enough radiant heat to keep the temp up and humidity low. Using gas heaters when coating isn't ideal as your adding a lot of moisture to the air. It's already a lot warmer and after insulating the loft space and insulating and reducing the draft from the garage door should be spot on.

Put it into small tasks, otherwise nothing gets done - learnt that the hard way unfortunately.

Got painting finished in the clean room yesterday and finished some boarding out and insulating in the work room. Today i got the rest of the jointing done. All painted now too!

5 coats of bloody masonary paint, the new board was thirsty!

just need to do a bit of sealing and all good. I will tidy up the clean room tomorrow and take some pics. Start work for the airlines tomorrow, battons and ply boards for the condensers and measure up how much piping will be needed.

Do you have any extraction on your blast cabinet, might be worth considering as without the cabinet quickly becomes an exercise in touch as the visibility becomes zero.
I have adjustable extraction on mine so that depending on the media I am using I can set it up to remove dust but not media.
The other plus point is it keeps your workshop cleaner, without extraction the positive pressure in the cabinet forces fine dust out of every seal and vent covering everything as well as filling your nostrils if you don't wear dust masks.
My extractor is a double cloth bag cyclone type, the sort used for woodworking machinery. You could use a vacuum/Hoover but the filters will clog pretty quick.
It is possible to use a plastic bin/barrel as a cyclone inbetween your cabinet and vacuum source to collect the majority of the dust.

I have a small shop vac plumbed into the cabinet. Does the job but will be upgrading at some point.

Of course! Had to remove so i could board out round the gas and electricity meter. got theses 16amp socket box to install too

Started to insulate the garage door this evening. Started of by giving it a good clean with panel wipe

Got some door insulation from Wickes, looked like a good deal - buy one get the second half price

Then cut the insulation to fit between ribs, got the first layer done. I used conract adhesive to bond it to the door, by my rekoning i should get another 2 layers to make flush with the ribs. I also got a piece of celotex for the top 2 thirds which will make it flush with the door casing. Aon the lower i will build up with a few more layers of the foil insulation so as not to interfere with the locking mechanism.

That door insulation looks good. How long did it take you to cut out all those strips? That looks like a job for the summer when it's a bit warmer . Have you access to a thermal imaging camera to check before and after heat loss?

Took a while to cut, didnt get back in the house til 10pm! And i have 2 more layers to do

Dont have acess to thermal imaging but i should get a good u value.
