that would be nice, will to pay more than beer tokens, maybe prosseco or babycham ones
Alumec 99 is pretty exotic (shown in the link to blackburns in earlier reply) - mega stress and corrosion resistance while still outperforming 7075-t6 on strength/hardness. Dare say in the size he wants it will still be the min order £50.

Just out of interest, say you bought a whole bunch of aluminium from a workshop closure: how could you tell what grade of alloy it might be?
so maybe weight aside, mild steel the next best thing after 7075, then other exotics higher up the food chain
Hand held hardness tester is somewhat useful to indicate the series of ali it is. We always checked the hardness on ali coming.
Good point, should have been clearer but what i ment by 'exotic' was density and Young's modulus don't really change with most of the super high strength flavours of ally with the exception of Al-Li alloys
I'd rather use 6082-T6 than mild steel... all of the flavours of aluminium that have been mentioned are sooooooo much nicer to machine than mild steel. 7075 machines nicer than 6061/6082 and the Alumec alloys Rocketman mentioned even better as they're tooling plate
As Phillip said design plays a role but typically the dimensions needed for an adaptor bracket often means getting enough section thickness and thread engagement length to make up for 6082 being weaker than steel is a non issue
As well as Rally Design there are several other companies that produce various 'half made' universal caliper brackets, Hi-Spec for example do a range of different offsets that just need finishing to suit the origional caliper mount on the upright
as I'm not doing the machining I'm not concerned about the nicest ones from that point of view, all I'm bothered about is the strength of the finished product, if that means using mild steel as it will be stronger than 6082 T6 then ill use that, even if it does mean a bit heavier, lightness is great in a track car dont get me wrong, but if i was totally concerned with lightweight over safety i wouldn't be installing a 10 point 60kg cage, i could of put a 6 point bolt in one for 20kg lighter.

looking at these pre made ones, they are made to suit a mk4 golf and my mk2 is using mk3 hubs so need spacing back 6mm, i can just make a 6mm spacer and have my mate tig them on all round, seems like the easiest solution

Given the size of them, and your quick sketch, 6082 would probably be fine, that's a great big slab of material for a caliper adaptor, most of the ones I've done are rather more flimsy looking!

thanks for everyones help, to be honest i have had a gut full over the last few weeks looking at brake solutions, so I've taken the easy option (as there are many other things to be getting on with on this car)

Well said-when I saw your comment about 142 squids for materials I thought you were trying to cut costs and corners, when it comes to some components in motor sport, there often no cheap options.
Its natural for competitors to think of their own safety of course, but, if summat lets go, there are the other competitors and the marshalls about, spectators are better catered for safety wise now.
Yes-I know there is scrutineering, but it has its limits.
Good luck with the build and on the track, don't try to beat my record-I hold the lapped record at most tracks in the UK- I was lapped more than once at most tracks

What's the cheapest strong option
to machine a prototype out of. I have just passed the stage of using plastic to get the spacings and sizes right.6082T6 is what my local supplier has in stock so at 18 quid for 2 pieces of 60mm X 40mm x160mm I don't think I can go far wrong.
It came Down yesterday......been having a mare getting brackets done on milling machine.
So I had to grab 3 more blocks. Only 25 quid this time.
Just as an update to those who were kind enough to assist me. We are at the stage my son just fitted the final final final rough prototype in Aluminium and it fits perfect.
Bear in mind it has to be accurate to 0.25 of a Milimetre and I cocked up two blocks because I keep forgetting to adjust edge settings and hiked by 2mm because of the edge finder.....
It's my first shot at using a milling machine and it's been stressful due to the amount of people. Who have demands on my time.....learning to mill is hard enough without learning to design and solve the best way of machining it. Finding sharp tools in the size and shape I want and need.....I have so much more respect (and I had a lot before) for the mechanic that @#£_& about.
Anyway I need to cut a Brembo sticker now and then go and make a temp rotating vice. I picked up what I consider a Bargain for 30 notes but not yet had time to add a top table and vice.
