its a oil burner as im getting feed up of being cold in my unit and the gas bill is ever rising
i have already got 3 45 gallon drums of used car oil and plenty more if i need it all free

I'm suprised there aren't a million laws and regs saying you aren't allowed to build your own heater. Looks quite nifty though.

We just bought a replacement woodburner for the workshop - the field next door has a few thousand tonnes of wood in it so wood fuel was the natural choice. It's brilliant when it gets going - really takes the chill off. Just need a replacement flue now.

malcolm I did have a small wood burner off a canal boat but it never really gave out that much heat. As my unit is 35ftx21ft although it did heat the water ok. I did think of try a forced air unit on it but decided that I wasn’t going to gain much and I didn’t want to start cutting holes in it as I think its quite an old little stove

That is a neat idea. It would be illegal in the UK though - if nothing else it would be caught by the waste management laws which state that we aren't allowed to do anything useful with waste.

One poor sod near here put his life savings into designing a heater that burned waste cardboard - he figured it would be a sound way to get rid of it. Passed all the cleanness standards but it turned out that it would be legal only to burn new cardboard but not used cardboard. So his company went bankrupt.

Does look like a very neat idea though - especially as waste oil is such a nightmare to get rid of.

No we can’t as the people but the government can sell it on/reuse it and gain more £££ from it.
I was reading some info from another site and another home made oil burner is so efficient that it emits no harmful emissions as it burns at over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

All so I can get used vegetable oil/frying oil from the Chinese (comes in very handy when working late at night lol) at the back of my unit. Any one on here using bio diesel. Some thing I would like to try?
would it be ok to use it in a 1996 2.5 transit?

TBH........Getting yourself and your garage covered in oil. Time spent collecting oil ,handling toxic substances, getting rid of by product and also you are usually breaking some kind of law along the way.....Oh and about 25p tax on Bio plus the paperwork. Modifications to vehicle and limitations of fuel(cold weather) Do not be deluded you aint saving much really when all said and done. IMHO do some overtime and buy the fuel.

Quite. Actually having lived with an envoronmental legislation person it seems they tend to turn a blind eye to people being naughty so they can do good. So long as there aren't plumes of toxic smoke coming from the chimney you'd be unlikely to upset anyone too much.

The work by people linked from this thread is fantastic. Some really good engineering going on out there, and better - they've spent the time to write it up on the internet.

Correct. At the end of the month you tell them how much you have used and pay the duty. Or something like that. It is a honesty scheme.

From what I can gather it all comes down to getting it to burn right. When I first started looking at this as away to save on propane bills. I didn’t realise how many people burn used oil and how simple most of these burners are. I think for not much more than about
£30 (less if you have most of the parts or know where to source them from for free) you can have your self a very cheap and efficient heater. It’s opened up a lot of possibilities for me even a small low bake oven I have plenty of 10`x5` sheets of Zink tech lye in around.
