Thanks everyone, I'll keep the drive plate (unless the one on eBay right now end up making a 3 figure sum!)

Still not sure about the first pic, it feels very light duty compared to the machine. I can't imagine I'll need it - I don't even have anything that'll fit in the drive mount

The catchplate can be adapted into a backplate for an aftermarket chuck, I did this on my Boxford VSL (the catchplate cost me £4, about £120 cheaper than a ready-made backplate!).

...rather like this (the chuck is a 5" Bison that I blagged new - and very cheaply - from an ex's brother who worked for a machine tool supplier in the Midlands...):

The monkeyed holes and weld marks were present when I got it, they were the reason it was only £4 I just turned a register on it to suit the Bison and it's at least as accurate as the original 3-jaw Burnerd that came with the lathe (unsurprising really as it was thirty years old by then).

As I was out there taking pictures, here's my 415V-out 3-phase VFD and the associated gubbins that allows me to switch it between multiple machines...

The two multi-pole connectors at bottom front (front bottom? ) go to the start/stop/interlocks on each machine while the contactor to the left of the VFD switches the 415V between machines. It and the front panel switch are configured so that if you try to switch over while the VFD is running, it turns off the VFD - hopefully before it goes pop, they're not supposed to run into an open load.
The panel's a bit shonky compared to anything I'd build at work but I do the QC here
