Lathe chucks

After a week in front of the lathe I'm finally fed up with my tired old inaccurate 3 jaw chuck.

What's peoples thorts on different makes of chucks or am I going to have to sit down, bite the bullet and phone 600 group. I have a bison self entering 4 jaw witch is ok for what I use it for but I wouldn't like to use it as an everyday chuck.

I'm looking for a 160mm 3 jaw with d1-4 mount.

It is so it would probably fit another Pratt chuck of the same size.

How accurate do you want to be? or is it the chuck you have is really worn.

I found I use my multi size collets more than anything else

or any other make at the rite price just machine the backplate to suit your new chuck the one on my harrison is made by tos [err and dont laugh }its good quality and there reasonably priced

Does it just run out or are the jaws bell-mouthed? You can't expect a 3-jaw to be much better than 3 thou runout across all sizes. If you want it to run true turn the register with some play and bump the chuck in after gripping the work.

i have a very nice 8" 3 jaw for sale fitted to a backplate for my henry milnes...its 1.75" x 6 t.p.i.

No the scroll is worn to death some diamiters run acceptably true and others are up to 0.5mm out.

I have the same problem but mine is an 8 inch chuck. I was looking at the gloster tooling 160mm on ebay and it seems they are not bad quality..

The chuck is bolted to the backplate. Usual form when you mount a chuck is to turn a step in the backplate (called a register) to a close fit in the back of the chuck so the chuck turns perfectly concentric with the backplate. The problem is that (most) 3-jaw scroll chuck are not perfectly repeatable (since you need some clearance for the scroll to turn) so depending on the quality and useage the work will run out to differing amounts. What you can do is turn the register a few thou small so that the chuck can move about a little. If you want your work to run perfectly true in the jaws you slacken the bolts on the backplate slightly and use a plastic/hide/lead hammer to bump the chuck until the work runs as true as you require. I'd like to claim credit for the idea but I learned it from a post by John Stevenson.

I have found though that if you mark the work & chuck with a magic marker and put it back in exactly on the mark - more often than not it will repeat quite closely.

ime sorry mate i dont but whoever buys the chuck will have no need for the backplate so keep your eyes peeled or ile let you know the buyer

Just to add to the shopping list I realy want a chuck that I can buy soft jaws for as and when, this may be a probloem with the in branded stuff.

I had a very new looking Bison 3 jaw with my lath, it is inconsistent and 1/2 mm TIR wouldn't surprise me, hence I have used a 4 jaw or collets
since I got the lathe. I took the 3 jaw apart and the scroll slops around in the body of the chuck, I keep meaning to try bushing the scroll and
see what it's like.

My first lathe a myford had a knackered 3 jaw so i used the 4 jaw most of the time, i did get good at centreing though!
Second lathe a Bantam 2000 was worse. That 3 jaw was dreadful, half a mil you were lucky! THe one on my Harrison is fine, just as well as i wouldnt want to have to buy a new one. As for Bison chucks Tony from Lathes.co.uk told me they were pretty good quality, made in Poland iirc?

The thing that annoys me with the bison chuck I have is it only has 1 hole for the chuck key, it's very bulky and sticks a little long way out from the head stock.
