Trailer Plate

Hey guys, I know this is not really a welding forum question but I know there is alot of knowledge about trailers on here. I bought an old angle iron 6x4 unbraked trailer last I'd say she's around 15 years old. Seems like a homemade jobbie so there are no weight plates or anything is this illegal will this cause issus with the police?

The old trailers have grandfather rights there's lots of information on the DVLA website.

i built my own 15 years ago its got 10 cwt indespension units on it not braked or anything else no problems

Just remember non braked trailers have to be 750kg or under MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) IE trailer & load.

Also check that the tyres are rated for that amount too.

i brought me harrison lathe back in my trailer 80 miles up motorway at 70mph handled a dream . the tires were a bit warm mind and i put a bit of extra pressure in them it was well fastened down and the old bill didnt bother me

Provided it never weighs more than 750kg loaded you'll probably be perfectly OK to use it.

750kg is the max for an unbraked trailer if the car is big enough to tow it. You are only allowed to tow 50% of the weight of the towing vehicle so the car would need to be 1500kg. The rule is "

• Maximum 750kg gross trailer weight or half the towing vehicle's kerb weight - whichever is less." Pull 750kg unbraked with your Fiesta and you'll be pooping when you have to brake sharp going downhill. I wouldn't advertise that my trailer towed like a dream at 70mph either as it's a 60mph maximum and no fast lane on the motorways and the police do like to enforce it. I'm cautious with mine and have fitted a heavy breakaway cable since a few years ago when a child in a pushchair was killed and mother seriously injured by a runaway trailer not far from here.

I know a lot of people towing big heavy livestock boxes with no licence at all. In fact the brother in law put his onto its side and hit a road sign and the cops never asked for it! Wonder how many people are towing with no licence

its mainly the traffic cops that are interested in overload facts and figures.general plod arnt interested and dont know the law . if they see a scrappy with stuff bulging out of a truck they may call traffic and get it weighed thats about it

There isn't a fast lane. It's lane three.

Used for overtaking manouvers as is lane two, the idea that you then move back to lane one. Gives you two choices of "escape route" should you need it.

and doing spot on 70mph with a tailback behind and the 2 inner lanes are clear . look at me im mr bmw . and i say look at me burn him off and undertake him and pull back out and nearly force him off the road see if he fancies getting it scratched or wrote off

As with anything, you should refer to the towing information provided by the vehicle manufacturer!
But the trailer should be fine to a MAM of 750kg, the tow vehicle is another matter. Un-braked limits, nose-weight, rear axle loads etc.

Sorry it's me showing my age, I'll call it the outside lane

There isn't a fast lane. It's lane three.

There are 4 lanes on the M1 here so it's not lane three as the HGV are allowed to use third lane not fourth.

Great that's a relief about not needing a plate, will be just carrying general bits and bobs tip runs etc so should be well under weight.
