A bit more info on exactly you want would be handy. What's the max diameter of job you'll be wanting to turn, whether you're happy using changewheels else want a gearbox, what distance between centres minimum, are you willing to go for a machine with slight wear or which needs minor work etc. are all pertinent points.

if u have a metric or imperial lathe its not such a problem nowadays. using a digital caliper u can convert from one to another at the push of a button

I am very much into my classic cars, not comercial, simply for pleasure.

What I would like out of a lathe

well I would like to maybe lighten a flywheel or two, so a gap bed might come in handy.

I will defantly be cutting metric and imp threads

would rather not be changing gears, but if I have to so be it,

Dont need a long bed

I would rather pay the extra for a very good lightly used lathe rather than an old worn out one

Cant see me getting a lathe like this on single phase (thats all I got) so would have to factor in some kind of phase convertor

rather a good make than a not so popular brand

money wise, I would not know what a lathe with the above spec would cost me,

maybe some one can give me a rough gestamet

anywhere from 500 quid to a grand for something real nice plus the converter or some lathes u can swap the motor no probs with some effort

Having spent a bit more time looking around at what lathe to get.

It seems I have been going wrong.
I should ONLY be looking at lathes with a fresh coat of dripping paint as this magical stuff seems to transform an old worn out lathe into a fresh new lathe with no wear!!!

How stupid of me not to have known that lol

Well my lathe has a beautiful paint job, it looks like it was slapped on by the appreciate the morning after a particularly hard night on the town using a floor mop as a brush!
