Mig wire mosquito

I had a go at something a bit fiddly this evening. I did some googling of mosquitoes recently after several run ins with more than I care to remember. I decided that despite how much I hate them, their shock absorber - gentle landing legs are quite admirable.

It turned out a little more cartoony than I had in mind and would be improved by some "infill" in the body and wings but it does not need to be perfect as I intend to squash it. Just have to figure out how to flatten him in an aesthetically pleasing way!

Cartoony is good. I reckon as sculptors we are trying to make a cartoon/caricature of the subject. People see our sketch/sculpture and go 'Moskeetter' hey we have made a mosquito. Does that make much sense?
We are after capturing the essence of the subject. As an artist's confidence improves I think their tendency to being literal reduces.
Eh? I have seen amazing sketches by people that turn the subject into a few pencil lines, flick flick flick with a pencil and they capture the subject.

Looks unfriendly to my eye in the second picture. And I think it should be "she" as its the females that suck the blood? which can draw comparisons with some of their human counterparts

...never 'cartoony' (that sort of talk is generally used as a put down)

As Chunkolini says, think of it as a three dimensional sketch, or even a maquette.

The colour isn't great but my selection of red pens to butcher isn't huge. I'd say the body is about 4" long; 1mm and 0.6mm wire if that gives you an idea.

Also have an idea for body "infill" which I will investigate later...

Well, I did manage to jab my pointy soldering iron into my knuckle. I think that counts.

not really an infill technique, but what you might want to look at is artificial fly tying techniques and materials

as an aside, there is a picture of two black plastic bin bags, I have caught quite a few of them when on the river, so there inclusion is appropriate.

Better. Not perfect but rates fairly highly on the effort to satisfaction ratio.
