2k primer sealer

Hi.
I am having problems finding "sealer".
Most of the suppliers I have looked at, have various primers, but not that are described as a sealer.

My only primer, is a kapci 625 filler primer (surfacer), and it is very powdery. I think a sealer would be beneficial, especially as my basecoat is thinned 1:1 (nexa). It gets sucked into the primer a lot.

Any ideas why "primer sealer", "2k sealer", or even just "sealer" brings up nothing at places like Brighton autopaints, and eBay, etc. ?

I have a local supplier here in Manchester (JTB supplies), who stock a lot of MIPA stuff, and they don't seem to have anything on their website either. I haven't asked the chap yet though, and he is very helpful, so perhaps I should.

Any advice though?

I don't see why your basecoat is getting sucked in, especially into 2k primer are you sure your basecoat is decent quality

well, to be honest it has gone on OK this time, but when I was practicing on another panel before, it seemed to be.

it's black basecoat (BMW 475 black sapphire metallic/mica). The kapci 625 is light grey. The colour goes on green for quite a bit..

besides that though, the book I'm reading now also says to use a sealer.
I'm reading "Auto paint from prep to final coat [JoAnn Bortles]"

surely a filler-primer can't be the ideal surface though? it seems like it's half way between bodyfiller and primer. It really is so dusty and powdery/sandable. I'm not sure if other primers are like this.

I had intended to use 800 grit, but when it came to it, I realised I didn't have any
So it was 600 grit.

I made a few mistakes this time though.

main mistake : I thinned my basecoat 2:1 until about the 2nd / 3rd coat, when I realised it should be 1:1.

So coverage wasn't a problem this time like it was on my previous attempt, where it seemed to take ages to get coverage.

So in this instance, I've not had this issue of it getting sucked into the primer, or basically not getting any coverage of the basecoat over the primer, but it was a big problem on my test panel previously. It took lots and lots of coats to go from "green" to black, which is why I keep thinking I'm not using the right primer, or I need a sealer/undercoat.

I would get some 800 for your next attempt and if you was spraying black basecoat it should have covered the green very easily, if it doesn't I would say the base coat is at fault

The "green" that I am talking about is how the black basecoat goes on, when it goes onto the grey primer. It doesn't start to look black until lots of coats. It's like it's too thin.
Maybe I just over-thinned it last time. I know I definitely under-thinned it this time to begin with though.

sounds like you did thin it wrongly or the base is not so good, black usually cover very well

I did even wonder if I had been supplied it pre-thinned (it hasn't though).

I have another litre coming tomorrow anyway.

base is usually not runny when un thinned ie it shouldn't drip off a stirrer like water would

No that's true it didn't.

When thinned 50/50 though I was surprised how watery it was. I supposed that's to be expected though.

the best thing to do is try your new batch, but it should cover very well unless thinned way to much or is of bad quality to start with

Check the basecoat as some (including Mipa) are thinned 2:1.

Your book said to use sealer because it was written by an American, for some reason they always use it. If the whole car (or panel) is primed then it's pointless to use sealer in my opinion.

A few places sell it, JTB can probably get Mipa's 2k Transparent Sealer.

Maybe try a better quality primer first?

what have you done so far ? basecoat shouldnt suck back into sanded 2k primer

if youre seeing them on tv spraying primer /surfacer on then painting straight on top then thats what we call wet on wet primer

Yeah it's an American book.

Anyway as it happens my door/quarter have come out OK this time, although I've burned thru to primer with my DA in a couple of spots ;-) and the orange peel is pretty bad but looking better after g3 & polishing.

Epoxy primer is an excellent sealer

I use Kapci 625 daily, and find it perfectly adequate as a primer. It is 2k, and so provides a seal against anything underneath it. If you're saying it's powdery, then I would suggest that the gun is not spraying correctly, assuming you've mixed it 4:1, plus thinners. I've had this happen sometimes, or also when it's not thinned enough. HTH

Hi. Yes I'm doing it 4:1:1 as per the sheet. I suppose it is just that it's very sandable.
