Clearing up - what do you use

Hi,

Been doing a bit recently with metal, and being a bit green with it all I'm finding the metal dust/swarf and splinters get everywhere, but the splinters seem to really enjoy burying themselves in my hand/fingers.

Whats the best way to avoid this (apart from get tougher skin!)

I want to keep the garage tidy, but I'm unsure what the best way of wiping up is.

BTW this is only on a very small scale, few little projects here and there, and a kit car.

Like Rusty says, a strong magnet with some thick poly round it works great for picking up swarf and grindings too, those magnetic 90 deg 'clamps' are ideal as they've got a hole through them which makes them easy to grip. Just pull the poly off the magnet when it's loaded and the swarf just falls into the bin.

You can get magnets specifically for that. Long handle, and a switchable magnet.
I think Northern Industrial do them, no idea how much though.

Evolution do one too, called a cyclone. basically you pick the swarf up on the stick then pull the magnet up through the tube and the circular guard catches it and drops it into the bin.

I got a pneumatic swarf vac gun. $50 from ebay usa.

Great when you have been using flood cooling and everything is soaked in it.

I also use a old vax hoover in dry mode that I hoover all the swarf off the machines with. One thing I have done is replace the crinkle tube with one with a smooth inner wall so the chips don't get stuck. Works great

The Earlex workshop vac's are good as well. I've picked up everything with mine, very powerfull.
