MTA181 Best Price?

I'm very close to ordering an MTA181 Mk2 from Migtigarc. The website states it's an updated spec (12 voltage steps). £449 +VAT.

I guess the Portamig 181 is an obvious alternative but unless Weldequip can help I can't even find a price let alone somewhere to order from (it seems to be a bit of an 'under the counter' product )

Any inputs or guidance anyone? Many thanks.

From the same stable yes, the Portamig is a better package though
Genuine Binzel torch assembly; MTA use the cheapest Parweld "Eco" torch (you get a gob full of rubber fumes from that torch as the neck starts to cook above 130 amps!)
British made gas regulator (not some Chinese copy)

Just for the record MTA are stating they supply an "MB15 torch and regulator" Am I right in thinking that's Binzel not Parweld? Warranty is 12mths (5years on transformer). Free carriage.

I think they are both the same machine. The one I saw in MIGTIGARC the other day had a Binzel torch on it......

I gues it just comes down to who you want to support. I get most of my stuff from MIGTIGARC cos I live down this way, but find the salesman a little sleazy sometimes. Weldequip offers good fair advice and good prices, and is only a pm away

Check the address on the site this guy operates from his house, how can myself and weldequip compete with these guys when they have no overheads ie stock, premises staff etc, if you want a 181 mta, portamig or whatever badge it has on it then weldequip will give you the best after sales service, would you go and buy a new car from a dealer who operates from his house?

Portamig or Rotec or MTA

Hi All,

Am a little confused at the moment (no change there). The 3 machines listed above all have the same power ratings and look sooooooo similar.

The only difference seems to be in the price !

Could someone enlighten me as to what the actual differences between the three are?

I am in the market for a 215 Amp MIG and if there is a genuine difference then I dont mind paying a bit extra for the Portamig just to ensure the excellant after sales service you all rave about

Not trying to start a fight or anything, just interested in what I am paying for.

The three machines you are looking at are all made by the same company, the mta one stands for mig/tig/arc the rotech one is also branded with his own name the portamig is a brand name, the main difference is the warranty and who you think can back up that warranty best ie spares kept in stock engineers etc

Damned fools those TechnicalArc manufacturers. Good support is the thing that will promote their welders. Cheapo cost down retail prices will exclude good support (especially the out of warranty free repair that I got from Weldequip for mine when it went a bit tits up last year). Seems you have to cost that in these days.

I'm sure weldequip would give you the postal address of his shop if you send a private message to him to ask. I wouldn't suggest anyone post their contact details publicly on the forum (in fact I generally discourage it due to the security risks).

He doesn't have a website...yet, but he does operate from a genuine shop with a proper trade counter, not from his back yard.
He might appear a little coy when it comes to providing details of his business address, contact numbers etc but as a diyer who's spent the best part of 2k with him since I joined the forum I can most definitely vouch for his integrity! The level of service is second to none as an awful lot of members will testify.

I must also add that I've bought items from Diywelding via his website on a couple of occasions and again, the service (and prices) have been superb!

Portamig 215 it is. Yes its a bit more expensive than the MTA etc etc but I figure the level of after sales service that weldequip provides is worth paying that bit more for.

I figure it's going to last at least 10 years if looked after correctly so I am paying £7 a year for good service, bit of a No Brainer when i look at it like that.

Just got to get it past the finance committee now

P.S (I requested price and delivery from 3 manufacturers, guess which one came back with all the detail I wanted in less than 12 hours, 1 of the others still hasn't replied!)
