Broken stud extractors

Hate them with a passion and never use them, What baffles me is why dont they make sacraficial ones out of hard mild steel that will twist before they snap and at least give you half a chance of removing the stud

Because the teeth would not be hard enough to dig into the stud and grip it.

Obviously there are different grades and quality of tool steel and the cheaper ones are unlikely to be as good as expensive ones.

What you are after is a tough steel which can be case/surface hardened.

an agressive spiral and it would dig in regardless of it being hard...yea your right just case harden the outer edges

Ive seen the expensive ones snap before today too.

They will do given the right loading.

I have worn the edges of many a spiral stud extractor BTW.

The thing is being gentle and not letting horizontal load apply to the stud extractor (if it's a vertical stud you are removing if you get what I'm saying) - only rotational and vertically down the stud extractors axis. Use the smallest tap wrench you can. Always support the tap wrench especially when it's on vertical plan you are removing a stud from.

Drill the biggest hole you can without damaging the thread.

It's about the best advice I can give on them.

It seems a catch 22 with the buggers...drill a too big of a hole and the extractor digs into the sides of the stud and expands it the deeper and tighter it goes,drill a too small a hole and the tool has no core strength to go hard.I much prefer to mig a nut over them or loads of localised heat and centre punch them out.

TBH it's rare I break one but you are right there are other methods that work a lot better with a given situation. But sometimes you can't weld or use heat or the centre punch doesn't work.

I invested in some left hand drills recently. Much better when trying to get broken bolts etc out.

I purchased a Snap-on set from Ebay for about 30 pounds, only because I lost some bits from the SP set.

The Proto extractors are brilliant - got me out of a muddle a few times, they don't snap off in the hole like the cheap ones.

2nd that, BIL gave me a set with he was in the REME. Army field kit, so classed as disposable.

These days I prefer to use a 1/4 Bit TORX bit in a battery screwdriver (Impact type) the small impacts really help. Gets Philips screws out a treat.

They maybe a bit more expensive, but they're cheaper than trying to remove a cheap broken spiral easy-out from a snapped stud. Especially when you've been heavy handed, given it just that little bit more and air is now turning BLUE........................

I only ever remove broken studs by miging onto the sheared face. The heat added has never failed to remove. M6 to M12, once a grabbable blob has been added, work out back and forth with penetrating fluid

That's great until your 1/2 mile from the nearest power supply for the mig with only a battery drill or hundreds of feet up steel work with a machine to repair and no hot work permit.....

I have a simple set, they where quite cheap and are just square tapered pins but with a cutting edge along the edge to form a 'flute' you drill a hole and tap the pin in, i think the action of the tapping and the tightness of the taper that helps free the stud, they have worked for me very successfully.

Well I talked that up didn't I, just snapped one of in a sheard off bleed nipple.

MIG and a nut sorted it in the end.
