LT77 strip down

I know there's a fair few land rover owners on here so hopefully someone can help

I'm currently stripping down an LT77 and have got to the point of taking the staked nut off fifth gear, in all the manuals and threads I've seen this normally has a couple of holes in so you can hold it in place with a plate. Because mine is a suffix A box it doesn't have these holes, so in order to hold the gear in place whilst trying to undo it I've been putting it in fifth gear and locking two nuts on the end of the main shaft to hold it in place but I just can't get this nut to undo, any ideas would be much appreciated before it complete does my nut in

OT but if it's going into a Land Rover I have a brand new cross drilled input gear (and also an unused Ashcroft / genuine oil feed plate) I keep on meaning to sell on eBay if you are interested.

I'd jam a bit of aluminium between the teeth of the two gears.

I wouldn't think it would strip teeth of that size, but you could jam a pice of soft wood or the like in the mesh to act as a shock absorber.

You could also cross drill the gear yourself?

I'll probably give that a try then if brute force doesn't work then

I currently only have hand drills, no pillar drill so not really able to cross drill the input gear myself, need to fit a new input gear anyway so with an oil feed plate that should be okay hopefully

I haven't seen any mention of it being left hand thread anywhere but I did give it a quick try, might give it a proper go today just to be sure

A word of warning DO NOT USE Britpart, for replacement items, they are made from cheese and WILL give you pain in the future. (I speak from experince of using one bearing in a 380 box, trashed the whole box)

Don't worry, I don't touch there stuff with a barge pole unless it's something like a hinge gasket which I fail to believe they can go too far wrong on. I don't understand how they can make money with the number of returns they must get!

I couldn't remember, so just had a quick look - I could approach it differently as mine had a hole in the gear. I would use an impact wrench in the first instance, but failing that I'd sacrifice the nut by splitting it with a sharp chisel (or nut splitter if you have one).

Or - can you try using the square drive in the middle of the shaft? Appreciate you will lose leverage.

You could also make something up that bolts to the casing and engages with the teeth on the gear - similar to how you'd lock a flywheel.

Do you mean S**tpart?

As far as bearings I'd get some good quality timkin or the likes from a local bearing supplier.

Yes, as Harry says, their gear is appalling quality.

I'd stick with LR badged as it's either Timkin or GKN etc.

LR Series are very good and cheap. Nice (Dom) bloke to deal with, and what he doesn't know about LRs isn't worth knowing.

Managed to get it sorted today, put it into 5th and got a mate to hold the main shaft still with a couple of nuts locked together on the end whilst I got some proper leverage on on the nut (3 foot tube over a 3/4" breaker bar!) funnily enough I've been using your write up for working out how to take it apart and no doubt putting it back together! No end of help so thanks a lot for taking the time to put it up!

They were really helpful in my experience - recommended to me by an agricultural engineer who uses them for all his bearing supplies.

You've just reminded me about the first time I did that - on my Yamaha FS1E, many, many years ago when I was 16. In fact, I blew it up so frequently that it was a regular occurrence!
