Metabo bench grinder

Hi Guys ,

I am after a new bench grinder and have been looking at the Metabo range. I was initially going to buy a ds 200 which has 200 mm grinding stones & has a 600 watt motor, and then I saw the bs175 which is 175 mm and has a 500 watt motor but also has a linishing arm.

I am wondering would the loss of 100 watts make a great difference to performance of the machine and also would the linishing arm on the bs175 be man enough to bevel the edges on say 5mm thick box section ready for welding.

Your advice will be much appreciated as I don't want to buy the wrong machine .

Just spoke to our Metabo rep a minute ago. He said to take the worst of the parent metal off on the wheel, you would only need to go across it once and then finish it off on the linisher. For keen DIY/ adhoc professional etc it will do the box section fine. If it was industrial use all day every day then it wouldn't be man enough.
All Metabo stuff comes with a 3 year warranty (1 year but we register it for you so you get 3 years).

Sounds like making the job harder than it need be to me. Section on bench and angle grinder course sanding disc For my mind linishers are for smaller items that are hard to work on safely with an angle grinder without messing with vices and such. BTW if your looking in the catalogue its very inflated as compared to what you can actually buy the stuff for might be likewise on line, I have a bit of Matabo gear here and paid substantially lower than the catalogue price.

Personally i'd be looking for an old British made Wolf, pics of a recent example off the bay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WOLF-BENCH-GRINDER-8-034-TWIN-WHEEL-2950-RPM-TYPE-8726 but be be aware that the 3 phase models look the same at a glance. Ignore the power ratings on them, they have FAR more torque than the motor rating suggests (i use one for polishing and to drag it down you have to really lean on it with 8 x 1" or bigger mops). Even the most abused and knackered looking examples are typically smoother, more powerful and with much better/sturdier workpiece rests than anything you can buy new at several times what these can be picked up for
