Sadly - that's an astute observation. A pub full of females would not lead to this outcome.

Too right. That'd lead to cat fights, bitching, back-biting, scathing and untrue gossip and comments about anyone and everyone they've ever met, and would probably lead to no end of their blokes suffering days or weeks of grief for the stuff they haven't done but which the women told each other has happened, just for jollies. I think the sentence is a bit harsh, although they were more involved if bullet proof vests are required with normal shotgun activities?

I think the sentence is justified, for pure stupidity. First rule of gun handling, never point any firearm at anyone whether its loaded or not. He specifically pointed the gun at him and pulled the trigger. What did he expect to happen. A rifle shoots a bullet, which that plate would have stopped, but a shotgun shoots tiny balls of lead which disperse and scatter, as they did here and resulted in a death, purely due to stupidity

What does it take to get a gun licence here?Just anyone with no criminal record/somewhere to securely keep it and a clay shooting hobby?

Surely a bullet proof vest is useless after being shot anyway, so even if it had worked he would have had to chuck it.

It's like driving your car into a wall at 50mph to see if the seat belts work.

Ok just a bit of more information on this matter. A friend in the police informs me that the vest in question wasn't a bullet proof vest, it was just a general purpose protection vest. He also informs me that it's incredibly unlikely that you can buy a bullet proof vest in an army surplus store, there are some things they just can't or shouldn't sell.

The vest in question offered absolutely no protection from any sort of ballistic discharge, hence the outcome
