Giant Cut 40 problem

Hi... im having problems, sometimes it cuts and is fine... them I go to do another cut and no arc.... I have a 13amp plug on it, 65psi and the current is set at 20, I am cutting 1mm steel, when it worksits brilliant, any suggestions. ?.. im thinking it might be the actual torch, like a loose wire ... tia x

Have you tried new consumables? Not used my cut 40 enought to need to change them but on a Eastwood versa cut I owned a worn tip cause poor starting

1st of all that psi is a little high 50-55 psi is more than enough,on 1mm steel you could go lower,but air is not the real problem,unless its not dry,ie do you bleed all moisture from the compressor?
Have you got a good ground(earth)?
Any warning light telling you the thermal cutout has come on?
If the above are ok,then yer i would say wiring problems with either the torch or the unit,but as pondy says also try new consumables

I have the same model and will watch this thread with interest. I have tightened the cable socket to the torch switch and also tightened one of the contacts, the one with the gas that goes to the torch. I could move both of them around, had to slacken off some other nuts and then re-tighten to complete otherwise I would have been bending the internals.

When you get no arc I am guessing that there is air going trough, if so the torch switch must be OK to put the air on. I am also on 13 Amp plug and tend to keep down at the 20 25 amp range. Hope you sort it.

Just had another look all seemsok, air, current etc, tip is new, still doing it, think I'm gonna talk to the company I bought it off, tomorrow x I will let you know how it goes...x

Where did you get it from?

I know that sometimes on mine it does not start generally I have the tip hole to far from the end of the metal.

I got it of ebay, it's ok, I can do sewing today instead of metal work boo hoo x

I have done a bit of playing with my cut 40 tonight, and one thing I did not realise is that if the torch leaves the metal the arc goes out, it looks as though one has to release the push button and push on again to restart the arc. So if you go over a hole or it lifts from the work-piece for a short period whilst cutting the arc may not restart. This also goes for trying to start when not close to the edge.

Cass, what are your tips like? I was trying some work with a Plasma Pantograph last night and tonight by hand and it was crap, drop outs of the arc, sometimes not restarting for some time and the cutting was not as clean as expected. Because of a space issue had fitted some new standard tips I had just got off ebay, these are shorter then the ones fitted when I bought mine.

Anyway, I struggled on with trying to adjust air pressure and the amps setting, but during cuts I was still loosing the arc, it was unreliable and cutting crap. I also noticed the air flow would dip and build up half a kg/cm2 on the pressure meter. I then put back on the original tips and all my issues went, no loss of arc, gas flow a lot better, cutting a lot better faster and cleaner. Hallelujah!

Not sure what the major difference apart from length, but I have 12 crap tips, thankfully they did not cost a lot. I will go back to ebay and try to get some longer ones and see if the perform better and as the originals.

Mine cuts out from time to time , I assumed it was the thermal cut out, but switching the machine off and on again clears it, other than that it works perfectly on 6mm steel so pleased with it generally.
