spot weld removal advice

Hi all,

can I ask for some advice please.

I need to remove a few spot welds from an inner plate on a motorcycle exhaust, (when i take the outer cover off the spot welds face you as if looking at a clock face). What is the best and cheapest way of doing this please.

Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

You can buy a purpose made spotweld drill bit,not too expensive.

Hi,

or you could drill a 3mm (1/8") pilot hole and then drill the spot out with a bigger bit, maybe 10mm (3/8") or 12mm (1/2") depending on the size of the weld. You'd then need to run a bit of weld into the hole in the piece that you're keeping.

Spotweld drill bits are designed to only cut through the spotweld and not the metal underneath.

Yeah, but it's dead easy to cut into the metal underneath Does anybody know if these are easy to sharpen? I'm going to be using mine again soon on the car but the one I have is pretty blunt!

Is it one of the ones with the spring-loaded point? You can get replacement blades for those.

No, it hasn't got a spring loaded point. It's just a regular spot weld drill bit. I remember someone saying they were hard to sharpen.

I use a normal bit, 8mm, but ground so the tip angle is very shallow.
