The local dairy farmer calls on me to fix everything plumbing refrigeration tank wash system and fix his loo in the house.
He has a big generator which runs off the pto from the tractor it has never been used in 4years bought new then and he wants me to get it up and running. he has tried it and no juice comes out.
I am suspecting I need to re excite the thing it is telling me in the book to apply 12v across the electronic regulator with a 300hm resistance in series using a battery what in layman's terms is that saying. is the resistor across the terminals or in line with the pos connection and can i just splash it with a battery charger as at least has an overload inside.

"In series" means the resistor has one end connected to one battery terminal and the other end connected to the regulator. The other battery terminal goes to the other terminal on the regulator.

If you connected the resistor across the battery terminals that would be in parallel.

I would check the book carefully, it's most likely that the battery has to be connected the right way round.

It would be handy to know what wattage the resistor should be, failing that how much current will be drawn through it.

I wouldn't use a battery charger, their open circuit voltage may be too high.

make sure no mice have been inside the wiring some jennys have a heater to dry out the wiring may have a external lead for it

In typical farmer mode its sited under a over hanging roof and is then got another block house for it so i am about to take the roof off it to get at the thing and get ready for an onslaught friday this week the book was left in the housing and it,s been in there for 4years and it is still dry so i hope it will not short out when we run it. I am going to put a 12v light bulb in series with the12v jump i will use a battery thanks for the help chaps.

given 12v and 300 ohms a half watt resistor should be ok as it would only be able to push 25ma through that

If it says battery then this would be preferable as most battery chargers don't output very good quality DC

12000mv / 300 ohms = 40ma

40ma x 12v =480 mW (1/2 watt) This is with the resistor in parallel with the battery, the current drawn will be less with the resistor in series with the battery and a load so 1/2 watt will be ample.

What wattage bulb? Don't forget a bulb has a lower resistance when cold. I'd get a resistor if I were you.

As usual i have been on line trying to find sincro generators uk. great down in surrey no answer on the phone searched again on line found a news paper edit they have called in the receiver sods law usual sh!!!t diferent day. I will keep you all posted thanks for all the help i don't feel so alone with this one but i will fix the bugg!!!!r.
Just a quick update i have contacted hgi generator's in derby they should be able to help

Most PTO gennys live a lonely, abused and neglected life until they're called into action with no warning. Likely damp - the most common cause. If you aim a fan heater (not too close) into the guts of the thing it will drive out the residual damp that's very probably the fault.
Failing that, check all connections for clean and tight and test windings for continuity and shorts. If your battery arrangement works, keep it running for a couple of hours to make sure it's not going to fail again and it will drive out the damp anyway.

Thanks for all the help people An update the model i am working on cannot be found so i have been in touch with HGI generators and sent a load of pictures and i now know where to excite the thing back to it tomorrow, I will let you all know how i get on.
