Safest way to store photographs?

This problem was challenged to computer Experts a few years ago.
You have to store valuable data for a 1000 years in a safe, what would you store it on?
All the magnetic media stuff wouldn't survive either would the optical discs etc.
There choice?..... Paper Tape (where they punched the holes to store the data)
60s Technology won!

my granddaughter had no trouble doing kiddie stuff on the net when she was 2 and 3, kids learn amazingly fast at a young age and take in the info better so bearing in mind kids will be born into this technology apps will also become bigger and will require more data from the web slowing it down further

....and this why we should be teaching them languages, maths and sciences much earlier than we do.....

I was wondering the same recently as it happens.
I can't somehow see my great grandchildren plugging in a USB stick or whatever in 100+ years time to view old photos.

I was handed a small box containing some old photographs, cabinet cards and such recently. All have withstood the test of time, some exceptionally well, despite being well over 100 years old. Working out who some of them are is the difficult/intersting bit.

Something I aim to do also, with actual photographs (people at least), is write names and years on the back.

I was thinking about this myself.
When inlaws died we inherited an amazing collection of photos. If it was today and stored on computer etc then they would have been lost.

8 track paper tape:
10 chars (bytes) per inch.
480 x 640 x 24 bits JPEG takes 257842 bytes on disk = 25784.2 inches = 0.4 miles (654 metres)

I was thinking about this myself.
When inlaws died we inherited an amazing collection of photos. If it was today and stored on computer etc then they would have been lost.

On the other hand my parents burnt most of our family photos before they died, if they had been stored on their computer and backed up on mine they would have been saved.

I have just scanned about 200 of an aunt's photos, who knows what would have happened to them otherwise?

Don't forget to record who, where and when data for your photos too.

The easiest way is to use the IPTC data stored in a JPEG. This can be edited by a program such as XnView.
