Companies shutting down for Xmas period, I don't get it ???

If you think business closing over Christmas is inconvenient, you should try liveing in my village the shops still close half day on a Wednesday

Well I opened today and got no business, so maybe I should have stayed in bed like everyone else. Didn't see any traffic bound for shopping centres either. Quieter than a Sunday morning.

you may aswell just go with the flow otherwise it just costs you to open up

Did you tell your supplier that you're in the self-proclaimed centre of the universe? Do these people not know that London is the be-all and end-all of life? I say name and shame! Have them closed down, then flogged to within an inch (other measuring systems of measurement are available) of their lives. Then we can hopefully return to the halcyon days of yesteryear when anyone who lived beyond 30 years of age had an hour off work for Christmas, children cleaned chimneys, picked pockets, or worked dahn 't pit (sithee), women weren't allowed to vote, and the Black Death was rife!!

I work in the MEWP industry, being as the building sites started closing from the 19th Dec and the Poles, Romanian's and other Eastern European workers started heading home for Christmas work has been dead.

There are a couple of the big Access Firms working but generally they specialize in supplying firms like The National Grid, Network Rail, for outages/planned work and also I suspect Cross Rail will be working somewhere.

All of my firms hire contracts for machines will have be suspended by the hirer's until 5th Jan or later.

So we have a yard full of machines, no room to move them about, no chance of getting any spares for them, be they made in England, Europe, Canada or the USA.

The European Manufacturers have all shut for the holiday and the the Canada/USA manufacturers operate European spares distribution hubs and will not import directly to end users.

The firms phone is switched on but won't ring until 5th Jan, it's BLISS....

fair one-but- remember langy is self employed, and in a business where the process of producing the end product presents daily challenges and you sometimes need a component/material asap-you don't get paid until the job is complete.
You also do not get paid holidays or overtime for working bank holidays so its often very easy to get frustrated with the 'system'.
I'm not sympathetic if someone has not planned ahead for upcoming shutdowns on the calendar, but sometimes you get chucked a fast ball and it can be frustrating to find all the teams have gone for tea.
The french 2hour lunch break still winds me up, but it shouldn't-I know its coming-but its a pain when you find you need some unforseen thingy at 1215, you won't make the suppliers, and they won't be back til 1430.

yeah thats it, and also, you turn up at 2minutes to 9 or whenever they open, and they aint gonna open them doors till the clocks second hand ticks round vertical.

its not so much the shut down from 22/23-12 to 2/3 jan that gets me it is the sod it attitude that goes a week either side of it, that really means a lot of suppliers effectively shut down for nearly a month for anything not on the shelves on 15 december

It's always been the same in industry though, ordering steel and engineering bits in this country we close down at Christmas.

You need to order well in advance - no point coming in over Christmas on a rush job if the consumables aren't there.

Can I see it changing soon for industry supplies - no TBH.
