Air filter oil

Got an air filter that needs to have "air filter oil" on it after cleaning. Can I use normal engine oil (got various types) or is it something special?.

In 1977 I bought a brand new bike-Suzuki GT185. After cleaning the foam air filter in petrol, I used clean "normal" engine oil to soak the filer before replacing it in it`s canister. I always did things by the manual.

Things may have changed in the last 30 odd years.

might also depend on the type of filter element, I've got some flame retardant oil for foam filters and its nothing like the k & n filter oil I have.

I use K&N oil for my K&N filters and its different to engine oil.

If its a foam style filter look for motocross cleaners and oils, putoline make one and theres another bio friendly brand. The residual oil is very sticky and doesn't drain like a car/mineral oil

It's a foam type filter, manual is not very helpful, just says wash in solvent, dry and apply air cleaner oil, A bit of googling finds mainly K&N (for fabric filters) and Castrol make it.

K&N here.But thats for pleated fabric filters. I'd try to get an oil for foam filters like optima21 has posted as oils have got a bit specialised nowadays.You can spark off a right debate-not to say punch up about oil.Or 710- as the blonde said looking at the oil filler cap at a funny angle.

I used to use the Siikoline Foam Filter Oil when I ran smoothbores on my ZX1100.

ha, my son many years ago did similar, his girlfriends rover needed water, so he said he topped up the cap with the watering can on it, I said the yellow one with 710 on it YES thats right i filled it to the top
did that watering can look like it had a drip of oil from the end of it. Yes thats right-------------OHH!!!

Where my mate worked many years ago, the salesman filled a Porsche 911 up with water, after the mechanics told him it had a leak in the rad. Pity it was air cooled though.
