shower unit??

we just had a new shower unit fitted.
the cheeky buggers charged us £220 to fit.
even though all plumbing etc is already there from the old one.
the shower unit Redring californian extra 9.5kw cost around £90.
they made £130 for less than an hours work.

the old one is only about 15 months old,again Redring expression 550s.
the heater packed up.even though we had a 2 year warranty on it.
redring wouldn't entertain without the paper work.
we had a new bathroom re-fitted tiles the lot inc the shower unit but the guy kept the receipt.
mind you the shower gets used twice a day ,7days a week.
is that good going or poor.??
next time I'll fit the b*gger myself.
I only got these fella's in because of the warranty issue etc.

If everything was already there then that does seem too much, but it is very difficult these days to get a tradesman to come n do a simple job. Argument is that by the time he's factored travelling etc etc it's not worth his while to do simple jobs that hardly take any time!

Seems steep, phoned last Tuesday for fridge man to come look at the fridge - Beko fridge not getting cold, couldnt hear compressor, was told not worth fixing. Curiosity got the better of me, found out how to get to the thermostat. Didnt seem to be working, made up a jump wire for the terminals, compressor fired up, 1/2 hr later fridge getting cold. Checked local suppy place on the Ind Est, yes we have them but theres 4 different models listed on the site can you bring it up. Whipped it out-off I went, £12 later new thermostat, another 1/2 hr fitted and fridge back in place. Saved a hundred + on a new fridge. Does make you wonder how many fridges on the scappys lorry are the same wanting a new stat.
Company I worked for charged transport and travel in one direction only-- never fathomed out which way so always made sure you were back before finishing time or straight off home.But many companys now charge a minimum to ring the door bell and maybe a 1/2Hr labour. Then megga bucks per Hr + parts.

most appliance repair firms have a minimum callout of fifty quid and that covers the 1st hours work wether its repairable or not. i have 30 quid for the 1st hour on most jobs i sometimes do it cheaper for some old folk if its a small job and there not well off and local

This reply coming from a self-employed man who runs his own small company employing a few men i will say things have to be built into a charge...Would you have payed extra iff the job had run into complications?....would you have paid extra iff they had broke a tile fitting it?...would you be expected to pay extra iff they had to come back iff it leaked after 3 days?...did you pay any extra for the running costs of the van/public liability insurance/traveling time getting to the job?...and the main and final point is did you agree to a price prior to the work starting and do you object to the company making a profit so that they can pay there wage bills and afford to eat?. Ime in the same boat as the next man when i get work done at home but speaking from experience of all the above i do tend to think hard before moaning to my wife and friends about how much ive been charged.

Thats a damned good price, well done to you, hope it puts food on the table and pays some bills. Cant be too many Trades prepared to come out that cheap and with a bottomless pit of sound up to date knowledge and experience to fall back on...

Have to agree with you on that one, we charge £85 + vat per hour if they don't have a maintenance contract, with a minimum of 1 hr charged from the moment I get in the van.
That pays the wages of 2 engineers and the person who mans our phones and does the admin/invoicing.
If its out of hours or a weekend there is an out of hours premium loaded onto the basic price.
Any materials are charged on top.

the guys i know are one man bands including builders local.1 van one man work within a 5 mile radius and no advertising costs. any out of town work the cost starts from home and fuel price added it pays to be in the trade and know who to get at the rite price

these guys are always busy. I've never had any one out be it a plumber,electrician,gas fitter who is only working for me.
they probably done at least 1 or 2 before they come to me and more after and they never come on the same day either always very busy.

i need a plasterer in the new year for a fairly big job at my house...i know ime going to be ranting the same verse as you too..LOL. but lets just say ime a bit more thoughtfull to any mans plight trying to make a living than i used to be.

but iff i send 2 roofers out at 7.30am to work i cant be saying to one of em to stand on the street corner while the other goes to mrs smith for 2 hours to save money...they go as a pair and come back at 5pm regardless.

no u send one guy on the big job all day and the other guy does half a dozen small jobs and fits them in when it suits or does everyone need someone to hold there hand . its not the councill u know they need a boss to go look then do the paperwork and then send 2 out and theres a minimum of 8 hours to do it . thats why this country is on its knees

I will say that buying the shower,maybe even on credit,should be factored in to a small job like this.travel,time etc.consumables.its not a huge bill when its all considered.it still would be a one man job in my book though

You gotta take into consideration if the thing cause a problem after the fitting he'll have to redo and repair the problem.

I always staple the receipt to the instructions and file them away in a dedicated box. That way in the event of any such warrantee claim I have all the relevant details and documents in one place.
