My old fella was a riveter in the yards on the Tyne. Skilled yes but very detrimental health wise. when he retired at 64 he had practically no feelings in his fingers his hearing was almost gone but he had learned to lip read. For his reward of 50 years in the ship building industry the state refused any compen. he eventually was awarded compen, but when watching old footage of shipbuilding he would say that's wrong etc, I wouldn't know any different, Old skills definitely. I think elf & safety might intervene these days.
