Newbie needs some help

Hi all

Looking to get a mig welder to do jobs on my Landrover discovery 1. It's nearly 22years old now so. Have some rust around the inner arches and boot floor and other bits here and there, I believe the thickness of the wings etc is around 1.2/1. 6 mm.

May be used for other automotive jobs and odd job around the hime/garden.
Budget wise looking to spend around the £300/350 if I can get something in that budget or below would be good, but will also need a mask, gloves, gas and all the other kit to get me started.

Im mechanical minded but never used a welding in my life, I intended to get lots of off cuts from work as I'm an engineer to practice on before I go any where near the discovery

So and help or advice in what to go for would be great

Aren't the wings aluminium ?

I believe they are. Door skins and rear quarters too. Roof is steel tho.

The inner wings are steel I be leave and the outer wings are made of aluminium?

^^^ correct, the inner arches are prone to rot, as is the boot floor, the rear seat belt mounts and the body mounts under the rear bumper.

Yep these are all the areas I was told to check when buying g, the boot floor is pretty good, the main of my rust is the inner wings rest is not to bad for now, but will need to be done at some point no doubt.

So for welders does anyone use the Clarke 151TE? From machine mart if so any reviews on it and does any e know if it comes with full set up including gas etc?

I had a 151 Clarke as my first hobby set for working on landrovers at home, it was perfectly adequate.

You cant go wrong with a clarke for a budget machine.you might even find a good second hand setup with everything you need

can the clarke 151te plug straight into uk socket on do i need some kind of inverter ?
anyone got one from machine mark in the last few months and can confirm what it comes with ?

Hi there, yes it will run directly off a 13 amp plug, although one may not be fitted, I think Clarke say a 16amp supply is required, but this is to cover themselves as they may blow 13 amp fuses sometimes when on full chat. If not fitted, use a good quality plug & some spare fuses & get welding.

Are there any other welders to consider for a newbie in the £300 or less price range other than the Clarke 151TE?
