What the hell is going on with this paint?

Looks like you polished over water spots, had that happen before. I stay away from polish nowadays. After you have used g3 or similar use a clay bar and wax. Superior resin especially makes a mess of modern dark colours, have s good look on a sunny day at all the shiny dark cars, nearly all have damaged paint - usually a hologram effect as it's now in the valeting world.

Hi mate, I really doubt I poilished over water as the car was polished in the workshop before it came outside.
I have seen reference to this clay bar business before but I haven't a clue what that's about, if you have a minute mate could you explain the procedure please?

you use the claybar first to remove any contaminents like rail dust etc

then polish - nothing wrong with super resin at all

then wax or sealant once its looking spot on

I went over each panel with one of those sticky dust bug cloths you use before spraying, then polished, isn't that similar?

If we are talking autoglym super resin I would avoid for the best finish. That isn't just a polish it also protects as another point. IMO there are far better products on the market now days even available down Halfords. The super resin stuff it hard to apply, hard to remove and is messy - also I don't think the results are that great.

I don't think its a paint problem? I think is excess G10 compound not been erased enough or polish removed thoroughly.

Yup! I will give that a go tomorrow Miggy mate, do you mean restoring isn't everyone's cuppa or that particular car? If you meant the car, I bought it new in 1984 and it's been on the road ever since, always passes it's mot and was just starting to get a bit tatty so I thought I would give her a bit of TLC I love my old Toyota's especially my Camry, the wife uses this Carina and she loves it. They don't make them as solid as these now mate.

the car mate, she has obviously been well looked after, ive always liked the reliability of the older toyotas and nissan motors but the modern ones not so much.

no its not like a tack cloth

you know when you run your hand over an old tired cars paint and it feels like sandpaper ? well a clay bar takes off any bits that stuck to the paint without taking off paint with it

people get shirty when i say so but its true , thats the reason bodyshops have used 2k for best part of 30 years

If it is porosity then I have the same problem with my MG painted 20 years ago in cellulose. It's a dark green colour and goes light green when it gets wet after direct sunlight. The light green doesn't go away without a polish. My theory is micro-porosity caused by water evaporation after painting because I didn't have proper water filtering in the air line.

If it's the same problem you might also get micro-blistering when it gets hot as water makes it's way from the lower layers of paint.

I should keep polishing, live with it and hope for the best.

Ok Malc I will bear that in mind although I drained the comp. every night and have water filters in the lines and at the gun.

I had a bright red 190e years ago, it was fine all summer but the first rain and the boot lid did just the same, I cut it and waxed it and two days later it looked the same. I got fed up with doing it after every time the car got wet so I had to get the boot resprayed. I don't know why the boot went like that the bodyshop just sucked there teeth and mutterd about red paint being rubbish?? The fresh paint was fine from there on.

Strewth mate I hope mine isn't going to be as bad as that, One thing I am certain of is that if it is not correctable tomorrow by some means SWMBO will be driving a spotty car around

just remember even polish is abrasive if you keep polishing it you will one day go through the lacquer and as its only 1k its not that tuff.

I remember a bloke complaining to my paint supplier that his paint wasn't the wright colour it turned out that he had polished his car every time it was washed and after a fair few years its was that thin you could see the primer through it.

I know its a bit extreme but just letting people know better off giving it a good wax as that will put a barrier on the paint

Also bear in mnid for future paint work that 2 coats of 1k clear is not enough, you can do that with 2k but 1k needs more to build it up to the correct film thickness. You should be doing 3 or 4 coats.

The same issue as here, red colour, possibly 2k acrylic paint. It will always come with aging. Waxing or polishing is only a temporary solution since the white mat will always come out of the paint. If it happens not that long after repainting it meanst too much or too little hardener was used. Probably the boot of this car had been repaired before and somebody didn't keep the mix right.

Possibly this white discoloration is the hardener, because I once tried to figure out what caused the white residue in some cars that came to me for polishing, and after a month or even a year depending on the car, the problem appeared again. So I sprayed the hardener over the black surface and let it dry, and it went mat white after time, and was oversensitive to chemicals. Even if you leave a drop of hardener in the bottle it will dry white. But who knows as I said, without hardener the paint is also weak...



In this case, as it was mentioned... 1k... no hardener, water as such is stil mild, you had better not use any agressive cleaning solution on this car, such as strong car wash foam.

And I don't understand how it could be painted with 1k and at the same time it couldn't be with 2k...

The best to repair it would be to repaint it with 2k, and I tell you, you won't get it wrong with U-PoL, they have nice hard SR (scratch resistant) 2k clear coats, once dried they are really hard to glaze and polish.
