Is this a reasonable deal?

I was looking in to a local supplier for welding gas.

TMS are doing CO2/Argon mix in 10 and 20 litre bottles. There is no rental, just a one off surcharge for the bottle, then the refill fee.

The surcharge is £75+vat and the refill charge is £58+vat

How does that stack up with what other folk are paying?

I pay mine with a direct debit through air products it's around £100 every 3 years debited from my account and then £70 for a refill. This is for a large Argon technical. I'm sure if I shopped about id get it cheaper but my local distributor is with in walking distance so it's always available and I've used them for years.

Mines £4 a month and a refill is £35...or it was last time I got it filled, over a year ago probably.

That's at Solway Heaters Workington, next to the skip/tip facility.

As I said, without all the variables you can't accurately compare A 10L bottle with 100PSI of gas will last half as long as a 10L bottle with 200PSI of gas, I forget what the common sizes and pressures are, but just beware of this as you're shopping round, it's easy to think "ooh, that's cheap" and actually you're stitching yourself up due to the fill pressure.

I'm in the market basically because the bottle I acquired has finally run out. As it was buckshee and no rental/deposit on it I have no idea what 'normal' prices are.

@cumbriasteve I'll take a look at Workington. Rental does put me off a bit as my current bottle lasted me over 4 years so even at 4 quid a month that would have been over £200 just for rental...

I pay £55 deposit and £36 refil on a 9l bottle, or its £80 deposit and £55 refil on a 20l bottle.

Full deposit refunded if needs be, that's for argon mix either 5 or 20%, pure argon is more

I pay the same through Adams Gas, & can get refills through Eagle Plant. Their depot is local to me. Only 135 bar though but it suits me.

Chances are is that TMS are SGS agents:

Yeah that's fair enough, with your limited use the other option will probably work out better in the long run, when I first got mine I was refilling every 6 months so worked out ok at that rate.

Have you tried using just CO2? (pub cylinder) cos it can be easier to get and if at the right place you don't pay a rental just a deposit on a cylinder if I recall mine was £20 deposit and about the same for refills. As I acquired another empty bottle of same brand/markings(zero deposit ) I now keep one full spare and one in use.
Beer and wine cellar supplies type places. Note you MAY need a different fitting type on your reg ?
