Just spotted this on ebay, and took a punt... (Manchester Rapidor)

You can see that there's not a lot to go on at all!

So, if i want to start reading up on this in preparation, is there any text about? I know its pretty simple, but i still like to read stuff if i can! ; )


What model have i purchased? If i could fit it in the back of the landrover, that would be nice, but it looked larger in the photo (to my untrained eye)?

...in truth, smaller would be a bit of a relief. Easier to hide from the OH (until an opportune moment) and less space that i need to clear to accommodate it!

get yourself a scaffolding plank and 2 of u and u can drag it up in a landie no bother. there is no book info on them but there simple and u cant go wrong , edit and tell the missus its a good investment .man up

(they look just right in an old house, when sanded, and waxed)

I wasnt so much thinking of the weight, but the volume? Ours is a discovery (as per other threads, im after a 2a crew cab, so i wont have to consider roof height any more)

It's a Minor. 6" cutting capacity. You've done extremely well getting one for that price. That looks like everything is there. The only bits you can't see in the photo are the damper pot and the crankshaft, but it's highly unlikely they're missing. Yours still has the complete dog clutch handle too. A lot of those tend to get broken off. A few hours spent on that with some paraffin or kerosene and some green nylon scourers to get the slides clean, and you should have a decent machine. It should easily fit in the back of a Landy. One I picked up easily went in the back of a Granada with the seats down, and I can fit one in the rear of the Surf with the rear seats up.

Not necessarily. Wood is a lot softer than most metals, so unless you're comparing cutting on something like aly or copper, wood can bog a blade down quite badly due to it bedding into the wood, unless you keep downward pressure quite light. It's akin to how tube is a pain in the jacksy to cut with a hand hacksaw compared to cutting rod, and the same as if you try putting too much pressure on a handsaw when cutting wood before you have the blade moving, it'll likely just bog down and the blade will whip.

Well, not my pockets, as all they ever hold are dog treats and **** bags, but most people's have cash in them. £21.

Im more interested in if there are any obvious bits missing from it though - im not familiar with them. I was looking on ebay for a cheap, 2nd hand, chop saw for cutting up pallet wood for the fire, and just stumbled across the auction with 13 mins left on it. So i had a go, and here i am.

Seller keeps saying how heavy it is, which i find a little worrying. Seems the chap is a builder and him and his dad used to do iron gates with it. You would think a builder would be ok with heavy things, but he was showing a little concern that i wanted to put it in the back of my landrover?

Its about 90mins drive away, so its not like i can nip home if it does not fit! : )

It might be worth noting that the damper may be full with oil so if you choose to lay it down for transport it could leak out.

You will need some help to straight lift it into a landrover, but as mentioned above if you have a couple of sturdy planks you will manage it.

Net weight was listed at 280lb for the flat belt drive model, so allowing for the extra weight of the motor and countershaft coupled with the slight reduction in weight due to the Vee bet pulley on yours, you should be looking around 300lb or so. If you can carry six sacks of spuds in your Landy, you can manage the Rapidor.

Just strip it into segments to lighten the lifting. Two bolts hold the rear vice jaw in place. Whip those out and you can slide the vice assembly out. Four bolts hold the legs to the bed, two per leg. Separate those from the bed. Make sure you take a few pieces of 3"x2" or similar though, as the pulley rim will extend past the bottom of the bed, so you want to sit the bed on some laths in the back.

As Edd says, watch out for oil. I've personally given it up as a bad job even bothering. Every single time, I get oil seeping from something, no matter what I do. Shove an old bedspread or such underneath it to catch the inevitable leak.

Are we talking about oil leaking from the saw or a Landy here?

Our landrover is a working vehicle. Currently, there's about an inch of sawdust in the back. Sops up the veg oil leaks, and the water leaking from the alpine windows.

In contrast to the ever mentioned "if its not leaking, its got no oil in it", ours does not leak fluids. I keep a good eye on the foor under it, and get the fear if i see anything (as generally a rapid precursor to something breaking!)

Where did you get the 'list' weight from? 136kg is heavy to lift, but its not a concern for the vehical (rated to 750kg).

Thank you for the note on the wood for under it. Ill go and see what's what outside, where ive been saving the 'useful' looking bits of pallets!

You can also quite easily take the bow off too, to make the bed lighter. If you look at this photo:

Where that yolk is connected to the lower rear arm of the bow, there's just one grubscrew in the bow casting holding the shaft/pivot in position. Remove that, (it should be either an Allen head screw or a square head bolt, depending on age), and you can slide the pivot pin out. Loosen the four nuts on the top cover somewhat and you can then slide the bow assembly and slides off completely. These saws break down into parts quite easily. Btw, I was **** ways round earlier. The two bolts you want to remove so you can slide the vice jaws out are in the front, not the rear, jaw.

Stopped off at a friends on the way home - in the back of the landrover. all looks ok. Heavier than expected - don't know why - maybe cause it's on a chunky steel base too.
