the on/off switch has reverse rotation, is this possible with a single phase motor?

yes providing u can part the starting windings from the running and the reversing switch has enough conections for single phase. but i cant see the need to reverse and never will

There are some tapping attachments that work on a clutch and don't reverse, so they just stop at the end of a blind hole, then you have to reverse the drill to get them out.

Try tapping a blind hole with a reversing switch and see how far you get before you break a tap. It takes about half a second to tap a hole with a self reversing tapping head, you don't even have to think about it. I know, I was that soldier...

Yes I have the exact same drill, i put a single phase on it, you have to change the winding order to make them spin in reverse, you need to bring all the windings to the switch with a bit of 6 core wire.

yes ive done it on my lathe but cant be a...sed to wire it in so just use it as an on and off switch. if i want reverse i use the hand crank i made and iif u had a lot of holes to tap buy the tapmatic if your in that much of a hurry . why bother with a few one offs

Done it hundreds of times.

A blob of white paint on the tap chuck and count the turns.
