drill a hole in a piece of wood that will give a tight-ish fit for the brass casing, then gently drill. no problem at all.

I did a few for my father in 7.62. I did mine in the lathe, but drilling into wood and then through the case is a good way of doing it.
may I ask why you are drilling it? I drilled mine to secure them to a stand. if you are drilling it to turn it into a keyring, whatever you do do not put a head in it as that is classed as carrying ammunition, and unless you have a ticket for that calibre, and a good reason for carrying it the police wont care if its a keyring or a pipe bomb

ah that's ok then. why don't you just use moulding putty like everyone else? most people I know that strive for accuracy use a putty that dries hard, they stuff it into the chamber, stick a bit of rod in the open end and then when it dries a few gentle taps at the chamber and out it pops looking like a clay round

The OAL gauge is a lot cleaner and easier to use and with practise very accurate. Not heard of anyone using putty but have heard people using cerosafe, think that's what they call it. With the cerosafe you have to measure the mould at a certain time, 5min or something like that after pouring or you get a false measurement.

Although a cartridge case with a bullet head may look like it's real ammo, it isn't until it has a fresh primer and propellant in it. At least that was the legal definition when I used to own firearms back in the 80's. Obviously a key chain or similar cannot possibly be ammo if it's hung from the primer hole.

Tell that to the people that have lost their FAC for carrying ammo without good reason. One of my fathers old friends was sent down for having a load seemingly live rounds in his garage. They had no powder or primers but he still did time for it. They were only found when someone broke in and nicked them then someone reported it.
Got to disagree, innert ammo of all calibers is readily availble and can be bought and sold without any certificate. Have a word with your local Police FAC officer.

Yea you can buy belts of "dead" but live looking rounds from MOD surplus stores up and down the country...Just look at the militry trucks and tanks at shows as they have deactavated<<<(spell) turret guns with dead ammo trailing from the ammo boxes.

yeah, I have some spent and re headed rounds somewhere, mostly .308 and .45. there may have been other things surrounding people losing their tickets, but my fathers mate definitely did time for possession of a calibre which he didn't have a ticket for, and they were all fired shells with new heads in, no primer or powder. he did a few months for it.

Loaded rounds without an FAC allowing you to hold them makes them illegal. You can own inert rounds no problem, a hole through case wall or drilling out the primer pocket is all that is required. I have a small collection of Pom Pom rounds from the wars, they all have primers removed and a hole through the case wall. The projectiles have been made inert by removing the explosives and filling with epoxy resin.

Doubtless the case was heard at a Magistrate's Court. The problem is that the idiots on the bench aren't required to know anything about the law (that's the job of the police and the Clerk to the Court). As such they rarely know the laws they are passing judgement on and simply take the word of the prosecution for everything. The police love to make up new interpretations of existing laws when it suits their purpose. You just can't trust any government backed bureaucracy these days. They will happily see you go down for life before they will admit they could possibly be wrong!

There are easier ways to achieve you goal then. Take your case (it must have been fired in the gun you are testing and unsized). mark up a bullet with layout blue (marker pen will work) as will sooting with a candle, pinch the case neck ever so slightly on opposing sides. Inset the marked bullet so it sits inside but obviously too long. Put it gently in the chamber and close the bolt, the bullet will be pushed back by the rifling and the nips in the case neck will scratch off the ink until it can go no further. Eject the case and bump the butt on the floor if required to release it and catch the bullet. Measure the distance back the bullet is pushed, repeat a few times and this is your Jambed length for that particular bullet.
Note bullet curves (ogive) vary up to ten tho' or more and chamber pressure dramatically increases if you have a jammed bullet (this can be sufficient to blow the gun up or damage it ) its also dangerous to you. Batch to batch can be anything up to dramatic changes
If you are testing this for a factory sporting rifle (almost 100% you are) you will not make any difference you can measure to the inherent accuracy of your load over and above the rule of thumb calibre thick seating depth or recomeded COL for that bullet / cartridge. It might effect how you feel mentally it will that it all. Rifle manufacturers intentionally make it difficult for customers to do foolish things like jamb a handload in a gun and blow their face off in the process. Custom cut chambers in benchrest rifles and hand made precision bullets at premium costs are a way different things and this has created much confusion in the internet savey loading novices. Remember wet ammo , dirt etc are all likely to come in contact with the rifle and the ammo on a hunting trip, closing up tolerances and also creating higher pressures in their own right.
If you doubt what I say here consider the well respected and highly accurate 55 grn Nosler B/Tip and its kin will come nowhere even approaching the rifling in a .243 win without falling out the case mouth. The jump to rifling is likely over 1/4" in most rifles
To drill a hole through the primer pocket and flash hole you can hold it with molegrips as long as you don't get to enthusiastic with the force or step in drill size.

Hi Kent, done it before in a similar way as you describe. The results were ok but not as good as I get with the OAL gauge. I've got a load of 55 gr bt's loaded just need to test them. These are just for fun as I like heavier bullets to shoot with.

If we are actually talking .243 win your wasting your time trying to even reach the rifling to test were it is with a 55 grn bullet as it will likely drop out the case prior to getting there. I am firmly a non believer in jump lengths in factory guns with factory mass produced bullets
