just a little vice for you it's old with no identity i remember one like this in a blacksmiths shop in the 1960s
not mine it's in a local tyre shop even the jaws are still good on it

Nice. Never actually seen one of those in the flesh as yet, though I've seen photo's of the odd one or two. What do they look like in real life, meat and sturdiness wise? Always hard to gauge from a photo is that part.

Thats a Forged effort,looks distinctively like a pattern makers vice,probaly right about a blacksmiths vice because thats huge..

what it is sat on is a kitchen counter top 600mm with a bit of vice hanging over
i would say it's maybe 600mm long is the vise end to end not far from you in Doncaster

Yeah agree, the vertical bit underneath the front gives that impression.

From what I've been able to figure, they were actually a manufactured item, possibly occasionally used for military use too. I thought it was just some random attempt at converting a leg vice to a bench top one the first time I saw one, but I've seen photo's of several over time which are way too similar for them to be a random chance design. They look rough as in design which does tend to make one assume adapted initially, with all of the bolts and such, but it appears to be a consistent design, even down to that little fin which goes at the front of the bench top.

Like you, my first thought was a diy effort, back in the mists of time, but if they're around in significant numbers I see two possibilities:
1. An established maker used what patterns they had and truncated them, possibly to cash in on the demand for bench vices and likely to avoid patent rows.
2. Some magazine of the 1920s, like "Scrap Metal Fancier and Pigeon Breeder (incorporating Pigs and Pigmen)" ran a series of articles about how to convert old blacksmiths' vices.
