Honda previews the future of driving - without petrol or diesel

Honda's new hydrogen production facility in Swindon previews the future of the car - and it doesn't involve petrol, diesel or batteries.

"Hang on, haven't we heard all this before?" (I hear you cry). Well, yes, but this time it's different. For starters, the new site produces its own hydrogen. Previously the hydrogen filling station shipped in hydrogen by truck - but now it is all produced on site using solar energy.

I like the idea; producing hydrogen is the best use for renewable electricity and the oxygen could be bottled and sold.

Hydrogen filling stations producing their own hydrogen? I'd like to see the maths, how much Kw/sq metre? how many Kw-h per day? How many Kw-h per fill-up? How many fill-ups per car-day? How many miles per fill-up?

I rather suspect the area of a typical forecourt will provide enough power for the owner's car!

I was going to say I've been driving my Honda CR-V for ages without petrol or diesel. It's LPG OK to be fair it does use a tiny bit of petrol when starting before switching over to LPG.

The biggest issues with hydrogen is its rather poor energy density and awkwardness to store. Bung a couple of carbon atoms in to make methane, ethane or propane and it's a lot easier. LPG is pretty much pure propane, and well established.

I had an LPG conversion on my Landrover and it was great, but LPG is till a fossil fuel whereas hydrogen can be generated from renewables and if we don't do that we're doomed, doomed I tell ye!

Get rid off all the nimby's crying about fracking, extract huge amounts of shale gas and start sending what's left to Europe, get the U.K. self sufficient in energy and stick 2 fingers to Putin. Job done

LPG (propane) can be made from landfill and anaerobic digester gases relatively (UV light and a catalyst is one method), so it can be a renewable. At the moment though, yes, it is a byproduct of the oil industry as it's cheaper to obtain it that way currently.

You might be a bit disappointed with the amount of gas we get from fracking, its a short term fix which wont really benefit us but it'll make a quick tidy profit for the mainly foreign firms extracting it. What we need is joined up thinking instead of energy planning that lurches from one money making scheme for the big 6 to another.
