any tv repair people in ?

ive got a samsumg tv thats switched itself off a few times and now takes a while to turn on again

youtube/google suggests its a common problem and shows replacing a few blown caps that are always swollen in the pics

ive just had the back off and my caps look normal ..can they be failing and look okay or is my problem elsewhere?

I repaired a Samsung recently by trawling the net for info, depending on age Samsung might repair it FOC according to some of the stuff I was reading. I changed all the capacitors, a chip and a fuse, what model nmber is it?

This place is near us and a friend of ours bought some parts and repaired his Samsung recently. EMOS TV repairs, prices are pretty good as well. He bought a board and just swapped it out.

The swollen cans are a good sign, but not the whole diagnosis. Many millions of faulty capacitors were produced about 8 years ago, I have TV sets, computers, power supplies and satellite receivers all dead as a result. Change them while you are in there. Many sets have a recommended capacitor kit, which covers the typically faulty ones in the PSU.

What's the point of this post ? I posted a relevant link, could you not look through the site for something to help rather than just moan about the web design ? Are your eyes particularly sensitive, you might want to turn the brightness down on your screen a bit

its a le32a457 , several years old now so i doubt they will repair it

ive asked for help on badcaps see how i get on

just i was hoping to see a swollen one so i could find the parts , although an ebay seller has a kit for this specific tv for £10 so isnt the end of the world to get that and try it

The kits include all the suspects. You change the whole lot, not just the ones that look swollen. A tenner is neither here nor there, if it means a useable set again.

yeah a tenner is no bother ...i just kinda wanted confirmation that failing caps can look fine to the average non repairman , if its gona need other more expensive parts then it can go up the tip

this is the board - the ebay seller kit has 4 parts i can see more than 4 caps

is there anywhere else i can look for a good kit with quality parts ?

but if you enter the forum they do have some tellies listed and help from others that subscribe that is where I got info from one of mine. Sometimes to get info you have to search further than your extremities

Being ex servicing(ran me own shop)why are you assuming its caps? it may well be common fault on said set but sometimes just sometimes other components are the culprit,the most common faults I amassed on TV power supplys LT&HT side was dry joints invisible to the naked eye and a rub of meths showed em up as a dark crack or the notorious tracking splitting.

Have you had the pcb under a magnifyer for dry joints?

daniel ...all i know is what google has told me

i googled "samsung switches off" theres many sites /videos detailing the cap repair , they seem affordable and something i can fit myself , otherwise i dont have any know how or test equipment to dig deeper

no havent looked for dry joints...figured its worth doing the cap if i can find a good kit , i can look over it then

Well if you get it sorted? don't leave it in standby,I never did like the standby gimmick its a cause for shortning component life.

Whats wrong with remote switching power on and off completely,just pointless having standby.

Same with the laptops,every time you switch laptop on with power supply connected its shortnening the battery life as it goes into charge mode from power switched on when powered from mains supply.

They can be completely shot and look fine. Usually caps will give some indication before they go. Was it behaving unusually beforehand? You tend to find symptoms like taking progressively longer to turn on, high pitched whistles, interference on sound/video, improving picture as warms up etc. Pretty much just anything out of the norm. Caps tend to degrade somewhat slowly, so there's a good possibility they may not have caused a seemingly 'instant' fault between last time you used it and when it didn't work.

First thing to do with something like a PSU board which you suspect is faulty is to give it a visual once over, both component and solder side. Check for things like blown fuses, burnt out components and dry joints. Dry joints usually tend to have a crystalline appearance to the solder, rather than the usually shiny smooth surface, and may likely have a visible ring around the components lead. With the caps Steve, changing them all is good practice. If not, guaranteed the ones you don't may likely go tits up later on. Anything below 100uF or ones near heatsinks, make sure to change those even if you don't go the full hog and replace them all.

On a cautionary note, make sure the reservoir cap, (the large cap, near the mains input), is discharged before you phaff with it. You can get a nice belt from those if not, or a nice spark if you short something. Easy method, though not the best one, for discharging it is a pair of insulated handle long nose pliers or a screwdriver and short the caps legs. The best practice is just get a resistor of highish value and hold that across the legs for a minute or so.

With regard as to where to get caps, make a list and places like CPC, RS or such will have them. You may even be able to get the ones you want from Maplin.

it had randomly turned off a few times but came straight back on ...we had wondered if it was a neibours remote interfering with ours , but then the last couple of nights its gone off twice and wouldnt turn back on for 20 mins
