The bane of most diy welders is having to pay cylinder rental. There are a few more alternatives now though, a few dealers are changing the way they sell gas so it suits diyers better.

Fair play to you Oz, there's quite a few threads on here about gas prices and rental charges. Most people seem to feel the same way, if they can avoid paying the rental they'll do so. Mind you, some have come up with some downright bizarre (and dangerous) suggestions in their quest to get cheap gas

LOL, I had thought that a few times mate, when I read some of there ideas.........."Can I use a Co2 fire extinguisher" etc etc.
I never commented on how bizarre/more trouble than its worth some of the ideas sound, because we have free gas from BOC, so it don't effect me, but you know what I mean
over the years and don't need any of these

It scares me when people suggest using any old cylinder and saying they can get someone to fill it for them 
. I've seen fire extinguishers, dive cylinders and god knows what else suggested. Something I'd never take a chance with, too much pressure involved. The 'two bottle shuffle' seems to be quite a good technique though, no safety issues there

For tig on steel is it possible to get passable results using co2 like it is for mig, even if argon is better?
Thank you for the rapid response. co2 is tempting because of the lower cost. Does it seriously ruin the tungsten, to need regrinding or even a new tungsten, or can you just wipe off any contamination after short bursts of welding?

I can dial the amount of CO2 on my setup. I forgot to set it at 100% argon once. It quickly turned the tungsten black. CO2 breaks down into O2 and CO, the tungsten was burned, brittle and had a very flaky surface.
I ended up cutting the tungsten back about 3/4", grinding it did little good.

oh im glad you said that, i was gonna try co2 on steel....right scrap that idea!...for it turns out it was a crap one.
