Workshop security

[Spark plug]

im looking at increasing the security of my workshop, at the moment the weakest point is my roller shutter door. I plan to fit to 2 bullet locks from the inside, but as the door is electric I am worried about someone trying to open it with the bolts in.

So I'm trying to come up with a way to interlock the system so the door can't be operated with the bolts installed. Ideally I'm looking for a threaded plunger switch with a ball actuator. That can be screwed into the side of the housing and pick up the bolt.

Ile need the switches to have a N/C contact and ideally be rated at 230V so I don't have to mess about with a transformer etc. but I wouldn't be a probloem if the switch isn't rated heigh enough for the door as adding a contactor to the system isn't an issue.

Has anyone done something like this before?

Usually the control side of the door is 24v or sometimes. 12v you can wire in a microswitch or break beam or similar to that. Not something I've seen done before, but seems possible! Could you put the locks on the side rails the door slides in then a micro switch would work lovely!

Forgot to say if the door has emergency stop you could alter the wiring to include the switches so there is no way it can be opened!

If there is a tractor place near you try them, some tractors use just that sort of switch on the gear selector as part of the safety start to make sure your in neutral, Their prices might make your eyes water tho...

How about a reverse light switch from a car gear box ? that will be push to make so not really what you want, unless you wire it across the emergency stop button

just go onto ebay and search a push to break 240v switch, one on each bolt and your done wired in series of course

There are about a million massey tractors with the same gearbox neutral isolator switch. I can't remember the part number as I'm not quite that sad, but I am certain it will be well under a fiver. If you're searching, use the MF240/265/275/290 as a refernce model. or a MF 135/165/185 as an example. Probably originally made by lucas but generally far too reliable so probably moved to someone else

I'm not aware you can buy 240v AC switches you're on about? but there's nothing stopping you using 12v/24v DC switches on a 240v AC activated relay.

Two of these would suffice but the problem is you wire them up to a relay with a 240v ac coil and the mains fails for some reason they will be deactivated depending on how you wire them up to relay ie if relay energised for N/C of the locks and power fails then they will be open
If relay energised for N/O and locks closed and power fails you will not be able to get in.

You need a circuit that has a battery backup so that if mains fails then the battery will take over and vice versa.

these should also be able to wire into your alarm panel in N/C or specific panel requirements for this type of latching device when panel armed.

Are the bullet locks the type where you remove the pin when unlocking?.

You can get sensors that detect the change in magnetic field, I can't remember what they're called though, but when a piece of metal is next to them they can return a certain reading. So if you put one of those in the wall behind where your bolt is, when the bolts are locked in, the sensor will register their presence, and your circuit can disable the motor. Though thinking about it, if the bolt protrudes enough a simple microswitch on each would suffice. When either switch is closed, the eStop is on.

something like this might do you but you would need to mount it but I don't really see how you can incorporate a switch in to the bullet lock, the housing isn't big enough and then there is still the door in the channel once the lock is removed, are the locks going to be internal or external ?
if the lock was external and went all the way through you could put the switch at the back so the lock pushes on it

I like the idea of a solenoid activated lock of some sort, where you have to activate the solenoid to engage and don't have to continually power them to stay engaged. That would be far simpler.

but then you would have to add in a delay so that the locks are opened before the roller shutter motor runs

Simple enough though, as you can chuck a microswitch on the back end of the solenoid bolt to know when it's home and safe.

my roller shutter has the removable ground lock no safety switches and is key operated, so no numptys can try and lift it while its locked

I have no control, voltage on the door it is just switched 230v to the motor.

If the mains fails then I have no way to power the door anyway.

A proxy would be ideal, especially when I already have some, but getting them to switch a relay to switch a contactor etc.......... Seems a pain for what I'm doing

Make an 'E' section frame with holes in the top and middle rails to guide the pins onto microswitches mounted on the bottom rail, when both pins are in the frame they make both switches (in series) and allow power to the door.
