I am firmly in the camp that if its rusty, it doesn't stay on my bike. If its on the car it gets welded or sanded back and painted. Rust is evil regardless of its location. The only place I like that or oxidation is on sculptures

rust has little to do with rat bikes-they are normally rattle canned matt black or brushed matt black or red primer.Often bits of military kit might be fixed on, rough home made footpegs etc may be fitted in place of the OEM jobs.Another common feature is a piece of sheepskin on the saddle.

found it, there was a kit bike you could build which had paintwork resembling a long lived bike, it was called the Cuba Libre as it had the look of the old Harleys in Cuba.

That certainly does not warrant being on a scrap heap.. I remeber seeing a camper van in Newquay years ago and thought it looked awesome. I have seen some since that look bloody aweful though and it seems people are trying to copy the good looking ones but failing.

I would be ashamed to have that on my trailer-----on the way to the scrap yard, and I have carried loads there mainly burn outs, Ah maybe that is what the drum on the roof is, fuel, to set it on fire and put it out of its misery.
No sorry, by the look of it its not fuel its mercury.
I can't believe people think looking bad looks good, shoxs pickup is ok because it evolved into that, and it is good to see steel work that has survived the test of time and sun bleaching. I picked up a 70 odd yr old dodge carryall from usa that had had a gun box welded to the side then ground off years later, the steel and grind marks where still there, in the perfectly good but rusty steel, It was an army tool, a work horse, that is good to see, and you cannot imitate that look, as said it evolves. To me that is true patina.
But this crap is just that.

Well, I don't like the fake patina/barn find/rat look stuff myself, (I honestly don't even get the air cooled VW thing either) but having been into older cars since the mid 70s, and having seen the concours brigade in action up close, I really think the old car hobby as a whole needs to be much more inclusive and general and recognise that without younger people and new ideas/fads/trends, it'll just be the same old concours bufties looking at the same old cars in the same old fields week after week. This is the very reason I don't really attend classic car shows any more - particularly the local ones.

Whoever owns that Beetle has put a lot of time and effort into turning it into something that isn't a modern euro box and more importantly, something that he, or she, likes.

As, in the broadest sense, "engineering" people on here, I think we should understand that that and appreciate the time, effort, skill and probably cash that has gone in to making it what he wants it to be. I'm sure we all have hobbies or interests or likes that others don't understand or like.

I agree if we were all the same we would be boring, but rust is natures way of saying that item, whatever that is, should not be there, and wont be in a few years.

Not a lot changed to be honest, I've rewired it, replaced the windscreen rubber, fitted Alfa Romeo 156 rear Leather seats as the originals need refurb. Done a top end rebuild as it was burning a gallon of oil a month, (No smoke) And had a tarp made for the tub. And got the drivers wiper to work. And yesterday fixed the rear view mirror as it has been rattling round pointing at the floor since I bought it

Sounds a lot but it really hasn't changed externally.

Starts all most 1st time every time, and I love it, to bits.

The bad bits. None well apart from the twits that think it's been built to look old. So quite fitting for this thread.

Not got many pics, I've just searched over 2000 photos I taken of stuff in the last yr and there are less than 10 of the truck. So the first two are seats and tarp after those are pictures the guy in the states took

Can't stand rat look, in my opinion if you want modified and can't afford or do nice and shiny then don't bother.

I've been building cars for years, I've never thought "i'll just leave this one rusty" no, they all get painted and polished. The same with those stupid badly fitted wonky tailpipes, should be cut off and inserted somewhere dark..........

what about a 3.3 Nissan patrol diesel engine and box in line 6 you would be up to 35mpg ish quite a few fitted in landys or the Mazda one but that's a four cylinder one

Wash your mouth out with soap young man.
The original motor is staying put, sometime in the future I might stick a V8 in it, for now I'm going to enjoy what it is. Don't fix what ain't broken!

The amount of car shows over the last few years I have been to mainly vw shows the rat look rust look whatever you ******* call it has got worse. They seem to get more trophies than people that have fully restored there pride and joy

Whilst visiting Stonehenge in Summer 2013 we saw a VW combi camper in mega rat look with a coat of laquer over the "Patina ", it was also festooned with all manner of things .. A dust bin, chicken wire ,a big set of stags horns , a couple of past it plastic buckets etc. & the obligatory , " Bin mans dolly" fixed just below the front VW logo badge.

The ( fine patina ) rust was only just starting to take , before the lacquer coats were applied .. some of it was still quite bright .. I must confess , it didn't look too bad & it seemed to me to be artistic imagination & taste at its very best .

All Fiat's Alpha Romeo's & early Range Rovers as well as most cheap UK made cars used to look like that when over five weeks old

I think they rub candle wax over the rust to give it that lacquered look.
