No, you split it into 2 separate ones. (Effectively you knock off a bit of the atom which then goes on to knock off a bit off another, and so on ie a chain reaction).
It only works on atoms that are very dense and unstable, ie uranium ( in reactors, plutonium or uranium in bombs).
OK, but can you do it repeatedly with the same bits - surely there must only be so much energy to be had from a given quantity of plutonium before you'll have to get a fresh bunch?
